An excellent debut - filled with murder, betrayal and a terrific sense of place C J Box A stunning debut...At its heart this is a tale of bitter betrayal, lost hopes and broken dreams. The book has a tautness that is impossible to forget and which left me close to tears. It is also the first in a series. Its successor, Trespasser, also featuring Bowditch, is on the way. Grab him now. Daily Mail Stunning vistas...eye popping scenes The New York Times Book Review This is a compelling, moving and utterly impressive debut Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog The Poacher's Son is one of the best written debut novels I have read in years. This novel has it all - a great plot, a wonderful Maine woods setting and a truly remarkable and believable cast of characters. -- Nelson de Mille this is a cleverly written, action-packed debut... Brilliant characterization teamed with stunning descriptions of the area and a plot as winding and convoluted as an old forest trail make for a very satisfying read. Another crime thriller that paves the way for the arrival of a potentially great series featuring the character of Mike Bowditch... With, at times, lyrical prose and a sense of location that eloquently portrays the natural beauty of backwoods Maine... His grasp of description and the use of natural images is superlative throughout the book... A very satisfying read and an author that I would most certainly recommend. Raven Crime Reads

Set in the wilds of Maine, this is an explosive tale of an estranged son thrust into the hunt for a murderous fugitive - his own father.

Game warden Mike Bowditch returns home one evening to find an alarming voice from the past on his answering machine: his father Jack, a hard-drinking womanizer who makes his living from poaching illegal game. An even more frightening call comes the next morning from the police: they are searching for a cop-killer - and Mike's father is their prime suspect.

Now, alienated from the woman he loves and shunned by colleagues who have no sympathy for the suspected cop killer, Mike must come to terms with his haunted past. He knows firsthand of his father's brutality, but is he capable of murder? Desperate and alone, the only way for Mike to save his father is to find the real killer - which could mean putting everyone he loves into the line of fire...

Didn't really enjoy this. The main character is luke warm at the most - the plot forgettable. I've given it three because so many were enthusiastic and I don't want to bring the rating down but I won't be buying the second book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A dark glimpse of mayhem in the Maine woods 2. September 2016
Von Judith Lind - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This was a well written book set in a "new" locale, the dark woods of northern Maine. The main character is a game warden who seems incapable of confining his interests to poachers. He inserts himself into the case of a woman he believes is "missing" but since he has no real information on the woman's identity the local authorities dismiss his concerns.
The story moves along somewhat predictably and, although his "investigation" is threatening his job, the game warden won't give up the search. At this point I wish the author had explained his motivation better. Later in the book, Mike breaks into a locked house and stumbles around what turns out to be a crime scene and touches things throughout and even moves the body. Unbelievable that an officer of any kind would do such a thing.
But these are small issues. Overall, a good read and I look forward to more stories from this author.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not bad, not great, but not bad..... 26. März 2017

I can only assume that this being the first book in a series, that it was a set up of sorts, something to get you familiar with the character. That being said, it really didn't read like a mystery, it kind of dragged in spots. I will continue to read the series and see if his other books become more enticing.

2.0 von 5 Sternen A wrong choice for me 29. Juli 2015
Von Linda W. - Veröffentlicht auf

I picked the wrong book this time. I wanted something a little different but I misjudged my interests.
The book itself is a slow read. The character interactions and exchanges are elementary, lacking in complexity. And the primary character, Mike Bowditch, at twenty four years old with little life experience, lacks depth and compassion. I could not find any reason to be interested in him or his actions. Carrying a series could be difficult for such a young, inexperienced lead.
But the reason I gave up on this book about half way through is because I realized I could not read any more about animals in traps being shot or road kill or animal burial pits. I have empathy for animals and a tender place in my heart for any and all animals. I don't want to read about the realities of life for animals in the wilds of Maine.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I wasn't sure if Doiron'sfirst book was truly good, or merely another book by a Maine writer 28. Juli 2014

After having followed Paul Doiron in Downeast magazine, I was curious about his novels. In Maine, anyone with Maine roots who writes something that gets printed gets some publicity. I wasn't sure if Doiron'sfirst book was truly good, or merely another book by a Maine writer. So - I waited. Finally, upon getting a new kindle that was ripe for good summer reading, I purchased the first of Doiron's Mike Bowditch books. I was immediately drawn into the character ands the plot. I also found myself learning a lot about the Maine Warden service of which I was totally ignorant. After finishing his first book, I quickly downloaded the second, and am now happily chugging my way through the third in the series. I highly recommend it! Mike Bowditch is a flawed guy - totally believable - who finds himself time and again in trouble because his choices blend his conscience as well as his upbringing. The two are often in conflict. Doiron was right to give up his editor's job at Downeast. He's has a real talent for writing engaging backwoods stories.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A great read. A knockout debut. 16. Mai 2011

I will start by saying I was a huge fan of the setting in Maine and this author really made the landscape come alive on the pages, which is something that I look for when I am reading. Also, Mike, as a character, is at times both so irritating and so human that you can just see him him through the pages. His character is well drawn that you can almost know ahead of time what he is going to next to to get in his own way because that is what he always seems to do but at his core his is a genuinely good guy who just wants to simultaneously get his father's approval while being a better man than his father. I think my favorite part of this novel was the intense humanity combined with the broadly drawn natural landscapes that made me ache to go and see this vast wilderness that exists in Maine. It's definitely a book worth checking out.
