Kurzbeschreibung

Book two in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling The Wedding Pact series.

Divorce attorney Blair Hansen is convinced that marriage should be based on practicality, not passion. But as her own wedding approaches, she finds herself remembering her law school boyfriend, the only man she's ever loved, and regretting what might have been. Then a twist of fate lands Garrett back in her life, and the man who loomed large in her past is suddenly casting a shadow over her wedding, making her question everything. To complicate matters further, the job she loves is in peril, and she can feel the ‘perfect’ life she’s fashioned for herself start to crumble under her feet. Could everything she's believed about life and love be wrong?

Garrett Lowry is a divorce attorney who's ready to settle down. The problem is that he can’t find a woman who suits him nearly as well as the one he loved and lost. He broke her heart by playing the field after their break up—something he’s always regretted. But after months of pining for Blair, Garrett stumbles across her in a freak coincidence—and then destiny keeps throwing them together, the coincidences becoming ever more unlikely. He’s convinced it's a sign they should give their love a second chance, but Blair is engaged to another man—a man who is absolutely wrong for her.

Can Garrett convince Blair that a player once isn’t a player forever, and that happy endings aren’t just for dreamers?

I enjoyed The Player even though I didn't care for Blair. How is that? Well the author wrote the story in such a way that even though I didn't like her I enjoyed reading it. Fantastic as that usually doesn't work.

You first meet Blair in the first book in the series, though you don't have to read it prior to this one. I really didn't like Blair in that book so I was iffy on this one to start. Imagine my surprise when I got to the end and still didn't like Blair, but enjoyed every moment of this story. It was fun, I loved Garrett and felt bad for him at times, but it was a great read.

Blair is...hard to like. She is so self righteous, so head in the sand won't listen to anyone else. She was burned in the past when she was with Garrett and now she is adamant that marriage should be about practicality and not passion. After all that passion and love and all of that could get you hurt again so much better to be practical about it all. She has a guy who seems to fit into her life just fine and she is getting married to him soon. She doesn't care that there aren't sparks or real love between them as she doesn't want that. And none of her friends understand why she is going through with this. But she is no matter what.

Garrett loved Blair so long ago, but then everything got mixed up. He hasn't seen her since then, has become somewhat of a player, but recently he wants what he had with her bad. He still isn't over her and when she starts to get put in his path once again it was fun to watch the sparks fly. I loved Garrett and how he would stir up trouble and make Blair crazy. He knows there is still something there between them, if only he could get her to dump her loser fiancé. Garrett knows what is really going on and the two of them were awesome together.

2.0 von 5 Sternen I wanted to like it, but I just didn't like the main characters 5. Juli 2016
Von Therese M. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
After loving Denise Grover Swank's, The Substitute, I eagerly started reading The Player, but could not get into it. Whereas I really liked Josh and Megan, I felt the exact opposite for Blair, Garrett and Neil. I know Blair has her trust issues and strikes out at people to protect herself, but I couldn't figure out why her friends liked her so much and why Garrett never stopped loving her. I just didn't find anything redeeming about either of the main characters...I kept forcing myself to read the book thinking there was going to be some kind of epiphany and my mind would be changed, but by halfway through the book, I gave up. I stopped reading and just read the last 2 chapters. I really like strong, smart female characters, but Blair just came off as bitter, mean and not fun. Garrett's character also lacked substance....I just didn't get any warm feelings or excitement for anybody in this book. Since I really liked the first book in the series, I might give another book in the series a shot (especially if it's Libby), but this one fell real short.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Player - Another great book from Denise!!! 30. Mai 2015
Von Mrs. O - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Denise gives us the second installment to the Wedding Pact series and it doesn't disappoint! Just like The Substitute, this book was a fast paced read full of characters you fall in love with (Garrett and Blair), some you want to push off a cliff (Neil), those you already love (Megan, Josh and Libby) and the ever spunky grandmother (Nana Ruby). Even Knickers and Gram make an appearance!

I am so happy that Blair got her own book! She’s tough, ambitious and driven, but in a relationship of convenience lacking sparks and most of all love. Her wedding to Neil (aka the evil weasel) looms upon her and you can see she just doesn't have her heart in it. Enter ex-boyfriend Garrett in a “chance” meeting in Phoenix and her world suddenly gets turned upside-down. I desperately wanted Blair to give Garrett a second chance, but completely understood her reluctance. He broke her heart at a time when she needed him most.

I fell in love with Garrett instantly. Talk about being humble, knowing you screwed up in a big way yet determined enough to go get the only woman he ever loved. After five years of replaying his mistakes, Garrett’s only concern now was Blair and her happiness. Plain and simple. Talk about the perfect guy!

I definitely recommend The Player to anyone who likes a fun, fast read with a HEA. It left me with a “book hangover”. Now I can’t wait for Libby’s book, The Gambler!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Cousins Garret and Neil fight over Blair 6. Dezember 2015
Von Dave Parker - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This second book of The Wedding Pact series brings attorney Blair Hansen together with her ex-boyfriend attorney Garret Lowry in Phoenix as they are each on their way to Kansas City. Their flight has been cancelled due to weather conditions; both head for the bar in the hotel where the airline is supposed to get them a room. There is a problem, however – there are no remaining rooms available within 30 miles, so the hotel has no room for Blair. They end up sharing Garret’s room – platonically. Neither is aware they would face off against each other over depositions in a divorce case the next morning.
Neither do either of them realize that Garret would be a groomsman at his Cousin Dr. Neil Frederick’s marriage to Blair the following Saturday.
The Frederick family and the Lowry family share the matriarchal grandmother who insisted that Garret be one of Neil’s groomsmen. When Neil figures out that his hated cousin is his fiancé’s ex-boyfriend – and still loves her - he goes all out to rub Garret’s nose in the idea that Neil has won the prize. As one might imagine, the situation and the wedding preparations deteriorate into chaos while the cousins challenge each other over Blair. Meanwhile, Blair still has feelings for Garret, but she doesn’t trust him.
This story is a fitting sequel to The Substitute, the first book of the series. The last week before a wedding with all its various activities has a reputation for putting a strain on all involved – this one does so in spades.

2.0 von 5 Sternen A GENEROUS 2 stars 31. Mai 2017
Von Karen Talley - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

First I'd like to say that I have been a fan of Denise Grover Swank for a long time. I never thought that she could write a bad book, but...she has. Why on earth would she write such an unlikable heroine? I struggled through this book thinking that she would make some kind of swift personality adjustment and maybe decide to stop acting like a spoiled preteen, but it never happened. Blair broke up with her law school boyfriend five years ago because she thought he was cheating on her. He tried to explain but she wouldn't listen. Fast forward to the present and she is about to be married to a doctor that she really doesn't love. She has been told by a coworker that her partnership to her law firm is dependent upon her being married and having a perfect wedding. Hmm. On an out-of-town layover, she runs into Garrett, the old boyfriend and fights hard against the attraction that she still feels for him. Once back in town, she discovers that he is the cousin to the man she is marrying. I guess what happens next is supposed to be funny, but I just found everything to be annoying...just like Blair. This woman is supposed to be a smart, cool and composed shark of a lawyer. Instead she is emotionally immature and hateful. She pushes her friends away constantly and has a smart mouth with everyone. I couldn't believe that she actually had friends!! Will I be reading more of this series? No way!!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Really can't beat The Player! 29. Mai 2015
Von I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

I absolutely love these romance comedies that Denise Grover Swank has written. The Substitute was hilarious and emotional. The same can be said for The Player. The story is funny, dramatic, surprising, and something that everyone will enjoy. I don't tend to like romance novels because they are all the same. Not true for this series. In this one, Blair is getting married but it's a marriage of convenience, not of love, which is totally fine with both Blair and her fiance. However, she's been pining for her long lost boyfriend Garrett. What she doesn't expect is to run into in not once, not twice, but 3 different times. Is it fate telling her to rethink her decision to get married? Is it the "wedding curse" that is messing with her? She's got her life set on a specific course and things have to go according to plan. Or else.

The romance in this book was not over the top, not insta-love, not predictable, and completely believable. Both of the main characters are human, and they are flawed. We all question our choices when faced with life changing decisions, especially when we are young. Denise Grover Swank does a great job portraying these characters as realistic and they are totally charming. There are a lot of characters in these stories but you never feel like they are unnecessary or not important. Everyone plays a role and is included for a specific reason and not just place filler. The sexy bits (what few there are) are not too sexy for me and have just the right bit of heat for me. I highly recommend this book and this series and can't wait for the next installment.
