Kurzbeschreibung

From the author of The Hanging Shed comes the third instalment in the Douglas Brodie series.

It's 1947 and the worst winter in memory: Glasgow is buried in snow, killers stalk the streets - and Douglas Brodie's past is engulfing him.

It starts small. The Jewish community in Glasgow asks Douglas Brodie, ex-policeman turned journalist, to solve a series of burglaries. The police don't care and Brodie needs the cash. Brodie solves the crime but the thief is found dead, butchered by the owner of the house he was robbing. When the householder in turn is murdered, the whole community is in uproar - and Brodie's simple case of theft disintegrates into chaos.

Into the mayhem strides Danny McRae - Brodie's old sparring partner from when they policed Glasgow's mean streets. Does Danny bring with him the seeds of redemption or retribution? As the murder tally mounts, Brodie discovers tainted gold and a blood-stained trail back to the concentration camps. Back to the horrors that haunt his dreams. Glasgow is overflowing with Jewish refugees. But have their persecutors pursued them? And who will be next to die?

to my surprise, I read on and on.. not just because of the excellent story.. but because it educates and reminds us of a not too distant past, which is nearly forgoton.. It provides a very interesting fiction, based on a pretty valid historical context (much of which I knew nothing about before reading this book).

And - its a great read... a classic story.

Brilliant, authentic, tense, well researched historical background, unputdownable. One of the best books I' ve read lately. The first two books of the series are very good as well.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A fast paced and exciting book with interesting characters 31. Mai 2015

For the most part, this was a fast-paced and exciting book. I like the setting as I don't read that many books based in Scotland and the characters were well- developed. At first, I was bothered by the detour the plot took to Germany, but I realized it was necessary. The numerous twists and turns kept me gasping in surprise. I'm certainly up to reading another Douglas Brodie novel. The only negative part was that some of the events in the book didn't line up with the actual historical events. Otherwise I would've given it 5 stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another superb offering 29. Januar 2013

Gordon Ferris continues to deliver. The third book in the Brodie series, not quite as good as the Hanging Shed but if I had not read the Hanging Shed first I could find nothing negative to say. Like all of his books, the dialogue is excellent, the plot feasible and believable and the ending had a nice plausible twist.

But what is really impressive is the writing itself. Like his other novels there are sections where the writing is so good, the prose so descriptive that you get transformed to a place where you have never been. Like his other works I once again found myself bookmarking and revisiting sections just to savour the writing one more time.

I can not agree that this is a moralizing novel, it deals with real events, in a real time in the thinking of the day. Descriptive yes, disturbing absolutely, moralizing no.

If you have not read Mr. Ferris's other works. Do yourself a favour and pick them up. I am now in the uncomfortable position of waiting anxiously for his next work.
4.0 von 5 Sternen History in a Story 6. Dezember 2013

Gordon Ferris writes a historical police procedural about the Ratlines used by the Western Allies, the Catholic Church and others to help Nazis escape from Germany to South America, Canada and the US. Douglas Brodie, his landlady (and lover) Samantha Campbell and a character from Ferris's first series, Danny MacRae, join forces to help Brodie's friends in the Glasgow Jewish community. It starts simply enough, a few thefts that the police will not do anything about. Brodie is asked to look into the thefts, but these small jobs lead to something much larger. Sam is working on the War Crimes trials and soon Brodie is drafted back into the British Army and sent to Berlin to help with the trials. Upon their return to Glasgow, Brodie becomes part of a vigilante group, looking for the Nazis that came to Scotland on the Ratlines.

This book is really good. Historically interesting and a wonderfully told story. The events and outcomes (about which I knew nothing) are quite chilling. I just wanted to keep reading and forgetting everything else. The characters are all interesting and very likeable. I have now read all of Gordon Ferris's books and hope there are more to come.

Gordon Ferris writes about the dark times after WW2. He conveys the stark times that existed for those who were on the winning side and the moral judgements they made in the context of the times. The characters are believable and have their own legacies to overcome. A good story well written by Gordon Ferris.
