Mai 1945 auf Empfehlung des Heidelberger Philosophen Karl Jaspers in Neustadt/Haardt eine Deutsche Regierung für Mittelrhein-Saar ein. So illustre Personen wie Alexander Mitscherlich, Dolf Sternberger und der ehemalige Oberbürgermeister von Mannheim, Dr. Hermann Heimerich, sind dabei. Hunger verdrängt über Monate die Probleme der Kriegsgefangenen, der verschleppten Personen und der Opfer von Kriegsverbrechen. Ein Blick auf die protestantische Kirche, die mit bestem Wissen und Gewissen die Partei des Nationalen Sozialismus unterstützt hatte, ist erschütternd. Die französische Besatzungsmacht löst im Juli 1945 das US-Militär ab und durchkreuzt so den Plan zum Aufbau einer „Neuen Kurpfalz“. Der Prozess gegen die Täter vom 10.11.1938 lässt noch einmal die schreckliche Zeit des Nationalen Sozialismus aufleuchten. Die Jahrzehnte nach dem Ende des Sozialismus in der Pfalz waren von Hoffnung auf eine gute Zukunft geprägt.
