Synopsis

Economics is a methodology that has been applied to many areas of human behavior, and has had enormous influence on the study of organizations and human resources. Developed by much of the founding research from Edward Lazear, this economic approach in these areas adds rigor, structure, and clarifies many important issues. The goal of this text is to give the reader a rigorous framework for understanding organizational design and the management of employees. Not only will students learn and apply ideas from microeconomics, but they will also learn principles that will be valuable in their future careers.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Edward P. Lazear, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution of War, Revolution and Peace since 1985, is also the Jack Steele Parker Professor of Human Resources, Management and Economics at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Current and founding editor of the Journal of Labor Economics, and past president of the Society of Labor Economists, Professor Lazear is the visionary leader in the field of human resource management.
 
Michael Gibbs is Clinical Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Gibbs earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. He is a leading empirical researcher in the field of personnel economics, and has received awards for excellence in research and teaching.

This is the correct way to make personnel decisions for your firm. Mathematical methodology. Too often we only go by gut feel when we hire and fire people. Think strategically instead. Using this approach should lead to a more productive workforce. Innovative thought provoking cases and examples like "The Risky Hire"-which is a totally out of the box approach to hiring.

If you are in HR, this ought to be your Bible.

The most helpful and engaging textbook I have ever read. Actually, it was probably the only textbook that I have read cover to cover. I almost feel bad in this review calling it a textbook, because it reads so smoothly, and provides so many specific examples and stories to draw in the reader.

This book provides a strategic framework for entrepreneurs, managers, and hr business partners to make decisions with an understanding of trade-offs. How should you organize your firm? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a centralized/decentralized company? How should you design performance management and compensation systems? This book gives us the tools to make more informed and logical decisions.

In my mind this book should be read by anyone who is interested business. This book is a valuable resource that keeps giving.

Wasn't exactly "fun" to buy, but it was at a great price and came very quickly! I usually don't like textbooks but this one is more conversational than most and the chapters aren't horribly long so it's not a bad read. Good buy!

Professor Gibbs is the best professor I've had at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. This does not read as a textbook. The content is engaging and easy to consume, and the lessons are important and immediately useful regardless of your position within an organization. Personnel Economics will teach you how to structure incentives in your team or company, so that you get the best possible product from team mates or employees and your team mates and employees receive the most effective form of performance feedback and compensation. A must read for every single manager. Read this before you even think about taking over leadership of a team.

Its not a very good text book, it flip flops and written about stuff not relevant at all times. I only borrowed this book for a course, but I would not by it for any research.
