This book follows a gang of post-high school/college man-boys who collect shopping carts in the Jeebo's Gourmet Grocery parking lot, and otherwise earn a few bucks and kill time while waiting for their lives to catch up to them.
This could have been earnest-boring, or a Bill-and-Ted joker, or whiny, or deep in a tone deaf sort of way, but it doesn't fall into any of those traps and doesn't take the easy or obvious path. There's some sort of plot involving the boys hacking and messing up Jeebo's computers. Some blurbs make this sound like a slacker "Ocean's Eleven", but don't fall for that.
This is much more a "summer-in-the-life-of" shaggy dog tale about a bunch of guys who are smarter, better, and much more interesting than they first appear. Indeed, that exact point is made repeatedly, in a variety of obvious and subtle ways. The point of the book is to follow the various characters and watch them rise, fall, win, lose, and keep on going. It is not lost on the reader that, like Sisyphus, these heroes push their burdens uphill only to watch the carts all run back down hill again.
That said, this is not at all a book about defeat. It's a book about growth and perseverance. Not at all heavy-handed, it floats and zips to a jazzy beat. Lots of short paragraphs. Single sentence paragraphs. Quick cuts. Lots of changes in tempo and key. Lots of slang, smoke, bro-jokes, non-PC observations, hormones, and some ruefully acknowledged truth keep the jazz improv feel running throughout the entire book. There is a good deal of funny bro-talk and a lot of edgy and wise throwaway lines. It can move from goofy to heartfelt to honest and back in a moment, and that keeps the reader alert and energized. Good stuff.
