After having 5 children in under 7 years, my body was in terrible physical condition. My hips were particularly bad, and bending over was nearly impossible for me without terrible pain. Imagine that -- with 5 young children to pick up after!
During one pregnancy I was in a wheelchair due to this pain, and even after the births, the pain was never completely gone.
I spent thousands of dollars at the chiropractor, and found no relief until I tried prolotherapy and these exercises. I had only one prolotherapy treatment when I became pregnant again, and so couldn't continue the treatments. I felt better, but still had a disabling pain in my hips.
I actually only did the Pain Free exercises 4 times -- over a period of 3 weeks -- but that was all that was necessary to completely eliminate all the hip pain I had been having for YEARS.
What is even more remarkable, is that 3 of the times I did the exercises I was 8+ months pregnant, and once was soon after the birth, so I couldn't do all of them.
Even still, just the little bit that I COULD do was wonderful!
I recommend this book to everyone I know who has back problems. Egoscue is wonderful and has really made it possible for me to improve my life! I feel I owe him a great deal for this.

I must add my endorsement to those of others. Last summer, after two back operations, and hundreds of hours of physical therapy, and facing the prospect of beginning school in chronic pain that required me to lie down for several hours a day, I saw Mr. Egoscue's book. I tried the exercises, doing them exactly as he instructs. Within a few weeks, I noticed significant improvement, and not only in my back, but in chronic knee and shoulder problems. I kept up with the exercises, and, after about six months, I found I could do things I hadn 't been able to do for over ten years--like swim, lift weights, ride a bike. . . I'm not completely pain-free, but I credit the exercises in this book for returning me to about 80% normal. I continue to do the maintenance exercises daily. I'm completely convinced by Mr. Egoscue, and this is after trying conventional medicine and every alternative in the books and quite a few not in the books. His approach works far more effectively than anything else I've tried, from surgery to herbs. I recommended it to a friend who called me one morning in severe back pain--two weeks later she, too, was calling it a miracle. I'm in danger of becoming a bore at parties, because whenever I hear anyone with any kind of chronic musculoskeletal problem I spend about half an hour extolling the virtues of Mr. Egoscue's method. It works!

I purchased this book after being diagnosed with 2 herniated discs, one ruptured. My neurosurgeon told me there was nothing I could proactively do to remedy this condition, but I refused to accept this diagnosis and subsequently found and bought this book.
I performed some of the exercises for back pain and felt some immediate, but not complete, relief. I knew, though, that I had a lot to fix after being in an extremely severe car accident several years ago. I was extremely impressed, however, with the physiological foundations for this form of therapy. It just made a lot of intuitive sense.
So, I arranged to visit the Egoscue Clinic in Del Mar, about a 3 hour drive from my home. I'm now 3 visits into the 8 visit program and I could not be more impressed. These people are doing AMAZING things and getting people back to living functionally who thought they'd never be functional again.
In the strongest possible terms, I encourage ANYONE to get this book, read it, and use it. And if you suffer from chronic pain that is seriously impacting your life, you owe it to yourself to avail yourself of the clinic's services.
By the way, I've had the opportunity to meet Pete Egoscue and have spent maybe a half hour talking with him one on one. He's a very nice, humble man who has a sincere heart for helping people become pain free.

Ein tolles Buch für alle die Gelenk- oder Rücken- oder Kopfschmerzen haben. Auf die Dauer, wenn man gerade keine Schmerzen hat, sollte man sich auch das Buch "The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion" anschaffen. Mir hilft es gegen die Rückenschmerzen sehr gut.

_Approximately five years ago I had a complete set of x-rays performed by an orthopedic surgeon, and was diagnosised with arthritis, painful heel spurs, and severe plantar fasciatis. Since that time I have tried all of the arthritis prescriptions, and I could not tolerate the side effects. Many visits later to a chiropractor and a poditrist I was still unable to be mobile without severe pain. Water aerobics seem to keep me active, but did not correct the problems. I have spent hundreds of dollars on orthoditics and corrective shoes and no relief.
As I walked into the public library one day my eyes fell on this book sitting on the shelf next to the check out stand. I could not believe my eyes since it seems to have been written especially for me. This coincidence put me on my road to recovery. I have been doing the exercises about six months now, and I feel a hundred percent better. I now have a copy of this book in my personal library. I feel it is very important to read the complete book, and to keep it handy for reference and inspiration. I have a new lease on life due to the discovery of this book.

I'll add my voice to the others extolling the virtues of the Egoscue Method. What really impressed me, as an engineer and scientist, was Pete's recognition that the body must obey structural laws, just like a skyscraper. Buildings are designed so that weight is transferred through the girders, not the joints. In people, muscles position our girders (bones) so that they transfer weight effectively. When our muscles weaken from lack of use, the bones aren't positioned correctly. Our personal skyscraper begins to sway, and the wrong joints or muscles are forced to compensate. This causes or allows the myriad of ailments Pete describes, because the wrong joints simply cant bear the load -- knees wear out, backs hurt, etc. Don't think this program is easy. You must pay attention to detail when you do the exercises. It is hard, long work. Muscles that have weakened for years dont strengthen overnight. But feeling good, controlling your own health -- isn't that worth it? After five orthopedists and two chiropracters, it is for me.

Suffering from low back pain, hip pain, and neck pain for over five years I was given this book to read. After one session of chapter 7 I felt relief in my hips and my knees were more directly positioned over my feet. But as I read through this book I came upon some disturbing statements made by the author. On page 137 he states that spinal stenosis, spondylolysis,spondylolisthesis,spondylosis,and scoliosis are also muscular conditions. It may be true that these conditions were caused by skeletal misallignment, but I can tell you that after suffering with spinal stenosis for all this time and finding out that my stenosis is genetic and to try some of the exercises he shows for the back for someone with spinal stenosis would be crazy. He constantly talks about the curve in the spine but if you have spinal stenosis the last thing you want to do is arch your back. To disregard these conditions in one sentence and to think they can be fixed with exercises that put you in more pain is wrong.Even though it sounds like I'm condemming this book I just wanted to show that you have to pick and choose what is right for you and not to take it all as gospel. Remember in this book he talked about helping jack nicklaus the golfer,well jack just had a hip replacement last week.

It's a big ask expecting your body to get better by having someone do something to you -sooner or later you have to do something to yourself. The medical profession prescribes a tablet a creme or a cortisine injection and sends you for an Xray. The physio's give you a rub down, or connect you to a galvanometer. The chiro's give it a crunch once a month and expect you to keep coming back. The surgeons have their own remedy. The exercises you do at the gym are necessary, but not sufficient particularly when form and function are correlated. Egoscue knocked my previous beliefs on musculo-skeletal dysfunction into a cocked hat. The method is logical and compelling. Like all good ideas the best ones are usually the simplest. This is an excellent book for any practitioner involved in the diagnosis and treatment of people with musculo-skeletal dysfunction and for anyone with a crook back, stiff neck, sore shoulder, bung hip, game leg or dicky knee ... look no further.

Of all people, my ENT doctor reccomended this book to me and now I will be able to postpone the dreaded and imperfect knee replacement surgery which I was scheduled to have in Jan. 99. A true common sense breakthrough in pain management through using what your own body already knows - in good health is its normal condition. Thanks Pete

The techniques is this book are almost too effective that you stop doing them after the first time you try them since you think you are fixed. They stop pain immediately, unless you have really ripped your ligaments into 2 pieces or there is no cartilage left at all.
