If you can't stop eating sugar once you start, if you want to free yourself from painful consequences of a sugar addiction, then this book offers hope through a personal story of redemption. Karly Randolph Pitman lived a sugar addict's life, with binges, violent mood swings, yo-yoing weight, low self esteem, bulimia, and depression. She attempted to give up sugar dozens of times over 10 years. When she at last hit bottom, a sad but clear choice presented itself: sugar or her very life. Finding the courage to accept her sugar sensitivity and heal her addiction, Karly now teaches others who are sugar sensitive how to heal. An Internet sensation when first published as an ebook in 2008, this revised 2nd edition shares even more insights into how to live sugar free in a sugar-saturated world. But, dear reader, this is not a diet book. Yes, food choices are important, and there's an expanded chapter on "What to Eat." But more important, this book shows how emotions, memories, and habits leave you vulnerable to sugar's siren song. Kicking your sugar habit will be a journey for your physical body, as Karly herself experienced. But for changes to last, they need reach the emotional and psychological levels and beyond - touching your very soul. The idea of kicking a sugar habit intimidates all who seriously consider it. Karly explains how to get ready - and how you'll know when you're ready - to overcome an addiction to sugar. This book shares exactly how Karly did it so you can do the same - without feeling deprived, resentful, or like a food cop. Karly's gentle approach will help you give up sugar while maintaining a relaxed, intuitive relationship with food. Release yourself from sugar bondage following a method that's joyful, sustainable and lasting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Reading this book WILL NOT change your life 27. September 2010
Von Chris Shattuck - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
If you're reading this review, it means that have recognized that something is out of balance in your life and it has something to do with sugar. You're probably at a breaking point. You know something needs to change, but don't know where to start. You're about to begin a journey, and you're looking for a fellow traveler who knows the way.

This book isn't going to change your life, but it will be a constant companion to you as you let go of past failures and start to discover that you have the power to change it yourself. You'll find that the experiences Karly writes about in her unassuming, insightful style parallel your own, and by the time she begins sharing tools for breaking the cycle, you'll know that you've found your fellow traveler. This is someone who has walked a mile in your shoes and discovered out how to run in them. At least one person in the world has found out how to turn a disability into an asset that continues to pay out dividends. And one person is all we need to know that we're not alone.

I started reading this book on May 25, 2009. Memorial day. An extended family's worth of deserts were prepared for the event, including a couple of my favorites. It was the perfect opportunity to start change.

I was only a few chapters into the book, but already my pattern of sugar consumption had a name. When dinner rolled around I thought to myself "okay, I'm not committing to this change forever, but maybe I'll see what it feels like to go without sugar tonight." It wasn't my first time going sugar-free, so I was wary of broken long-term commitments that would only later become a nail in the coffin of my resolve. But that evening alone, I probably make the conscious choice to go without sugar 50 or 100 times. And I felt good. It was hard to tell at the time if it was the excitement of trying something new, or an actual physiological shift, but I discovered later that it was physiological, and it was repeatable. That "fog" that would come over my mind when I would consume vast amounts of sugar wasn't there, and I could be more present, more focused, and enjoy what was going around me a lot more.

That night, I stayed up until 2am reading the book. The trick for long term change, it said, was to not feel deprived by this decision to go sugar-free. To not feel like you're taking something away from your life and not replacing it with something better. Otherwise you are bound to revert back. So, you tap into the things that you like, the things that make you feel good, and you use those to fill the emotional and physical void left behind when sugar is no longer in the picture. I discovered later, for example, that physical exercise gives me a lot of the same pleasure that sugar did, but without the negative side effects.

That day of going sugar-free turned into a week. That week turned into a month, and that month turned into a year. In addition to no longer experiencing the extreme highs and lows that came with the the sugar-infused version of my life, I was also able to derive an incredible amount of strength from the fact that I was able to make this change. It was so fundamental to who I was, that I felt that if I could change my sugar habits, I could change anything.

At about a year, I thought I'd see if I could bring sugar back into my life in a healthy, sustainable way, and after a couple of months found out that my old patterns didn't change, they were just waiting for sugar. So, I've gone back to being sugar-free, and happier.

The other day I met someone who refused an offered donut and said "I can't eat that stuff". After talking with him for a while, it turned out it wasn't diabetes, it wasn't an allergy, it was that he knew he wouldn't be able to stop. Talking to him was like talking to myself, he had the same patterns, the same problems. I've also seen that there are other people around me who share the familiar patterns but aren't aware of them yet. We're not all that that common, but we're definitely not alone. And there's a lot to be gained from realizing this.

If you've made it this far, then you recognize something familiar in my experiences, and you are going to get a lot out of Karly's book. I'm excited for you. Welcome to the club, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another Piece of the Puzzle 20. September 2010
Von Mary J. Kay - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I have spent the last 40 years looking for relief from my sugar addiction. I have done endless searches on the internet looking for help. Then in 2009 another search for "sugar addiction" came up with Karly's website. I joined, read the Overcoming Sugar Addiction online book and felt like I had "come home". She spoke right to my needs and addressed what needed to change on an emotional and spiritual level. It just felt right.

It wasn't a question for me of what to eat, but why do I eat? Sugar is my "drug of choice". If I start eating it, the uncontrollable cravings take over and I head into a downward spiral. I go into depression and life becomes very difficult. I carry around a constant feeling of dread and anxiety and it seems near to impossible to break the cravings long enough to get off the sugar. When I abstain from sugar my energy levels increase, the cravings disappear, my mood elevates, my thinking becomes clear and life just becomes much more fun to live. When I found Karly's website and connected with others around the world who were faced with the same struggle I was elated. Someone finally understood my struggle.

This book outlines the inner changes that can be made to find peace on an emotional and spiritual level, thus filling our needs with something other than sugar. It's not a quick fix, but it's a journey well worth taking. Her book is worth the price and I highly recommend it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Finally, an answer! 22. September 2010

Sugar addiction is a common problem that is greatly overlooked. (YES - even for us MEN!) I've struggled with it for years, not knowing that something like this even existed. I saw a news segment regarding sugar addiction one day and it all started making sense. I immediately found Karly's book online, and for the first time in my life, I understood what was happening to me. "Overcoming Sugar Addiction" helped me understand my problem, and gave me the power to take control of it. Are you a "slave to the crave?" Get this book!

I read Karly's book online about 2 years ago after googling 'sugar addiction' - I was so impressed and happy to have found another person who had the same problem as I. After downloading her book, I immediately put it in a binder and began lugging it with me everywhere I went. At first, I thought this would be the latest and greatest in my quest for the ultimate diet. In my initial excitement and motivation, I was able to quit sugar for 6 months and lost 15 pounds. But then, over a Labor Day weekend at the beach, I thought "how bad would it be to have this one dish of ice cream?" Thus began my downward spiral into complete sugar addiction once again, which lasted for well over a year. Needless to say, I gained all the weight back and more. In August 2009, I enrolled in Karly's online "quit sugar" teleclass, while I was still eating sugar, since I was quickly approaching the desperation stage. The teleclasses were an excellent supplement to the information in her book, and having others in the class with me from all over the country made me quickly realize 2 things - one, I am not alone, and two - quitting sugar will NOT be easy. It wasn't until the 5th or 6th class that I felt like I had no choice but to try again - at this point, I was eating candy for lunch and ice cream for dinner, not to mention feeling drugged and fat and disgusted. I started again and have been sugar-free now for 1 year. Quitting sugar will not solve all your problems (I'm still struggling with the extra weight) BUT it will solve a host of other problems - not anticipating, agonizing, dreaming, planning and worrying about where/when/how I will get my next sugar fix is a big one, which has freed up a lot of my time to pursue new activities like travel, art appreciation, learning a new language, exercising more and focusing better at work - all easy to do when your mind isn't clouded over with sugar. I'm not going to say I don't miss cake, pie, ice cream, candy bars, milkshakes, and a host of other foods laden with sugar, but at this point I don't want it - I know where it will take me and I don't want to go back there. Just like any other addiction, you'll be in 'recovery' for life. And, like any other sobriety, it will be worth it. I highly recommend this book - you can take as little or as much as you want out of it and still benefit on some level.

5.0 von 5 Sternen OMG, worked for me. 24. Oktober 2013

I had a weightloss surgery and I am loosing weight. However, I can't stop eating sweets, just like before the surgery. I bought this book on Kindle. It is life changing. It never worked for me to eat sweets in moderation. It's like telling a drug addict to do drugs in moderation. This book is the first book ever that acknowledged that some people might need to never eat sweets. I am proud to say that it has been 3 weeks with no sweets, with all the temptations around me all the time. I feel confident that I can survive upcoming holidays :)

Update: its has been a month without eating sweets. Lots of temptations, but I dont touch it. I am hoping to make it through holidays!!!
