5.0 von 5 Sternen Belongs with the world’s wisdom traditions. 31. März 2014

Durants’ book is a classic. While modern research may indeed disagree with some of the content (modern research as a rule always disagrees with the previous viewpoints), it is irrelevant. Durants’ book is a more than just a collection of facts and viewpoints. Like Gibbon’s book it is more than history. First of all it is a grand perspective on humanity. It also a philosophy and it is literature. It belongs with the world’s wisdom tradition – it enlightens the mind and heart - very few books in the world's history can be ranked that high. And finally this book is a pleasure to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen “If the average man had had his way there would probably never have been any state..." 13. Februar 2016
Von Kristi Richardson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Hörbuch-Download
“If the average man had had his way there would probably never have been any state. Even today, he resents it, classes death with taxes, and yearns for that government which governs least. If he asks for many laws it is only because he is sure that his neighbor needs them; privately he is an unphilosophical anarchist, and thinks laws in his own case superfluous.”

I decided to listen to this series of books this year as part of my attempt to read 200 books this year on Goodreads. This first book of the series is more than 50 hours long, so it was a long start, but an interesting listen. Some observations may be dated as more artifacts have been dug up that change our views on ancient man, but this book holds up remarkably well. This book was originally published in 1935.

Mr. Durant takes us through the beginning of man to the Japanese of today. We get an overview of all the early cultures such as Sumeria, the Hebrews, Egyptians, etc. and then he delves into the history and cultures of India, China and Japan. It is a huge endeavor and succeeds for the most part.

I especially enjoyed the portions on prehistoric man and their art. I was intrigued by his hypothesis that women were in charge in those days. Who would have thought, but he makes some great assumptions.

The other portion of the book I enjoyed the most was the history of India and how so much of their achievements have been lost to the world because of the Muslims destruction when they conquered India. I liked this part because it was totally unknown to me before. I have studied China and Japan in other books or lectures but never India.

If you are interested in the history, religion, philosophy, architecture and art of a country or people, this is a great series in which to learn. I know I did.

5.0 von 5 Sternen REAL TREASURE 6. Januar 2016
Von Jeff - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Hörbuch-Download
The whole series is phenomenal, but there are no sound bites here. You may find certain elements more interesting then others but on the whole this volume of the 11 volume set is one of - if not THEE greatest avenues for understanding world history. written in a wonderfully readable narrative fashion, its (all 11 volumes) been one of the greatest literary experiences ive known. As far as this volume is concerned, I loved it and found it so amazing in every way- I now own all vol. in hardcover and audible. It just doesnt get any better. Will Durant's unique writing style is as good as it gets and I never tired of his talents. Now.Those readers of these times that can't get through a five-page article or sweat getting through a book over 300pgs should probably read something else. If your aim is to finish a book as opposed to just enjoying each page, read something else. For the rest of you- prepare to be amazed
5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic historical books by Will Durant 21. Juli 2016
Von HL - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Will Durant' is a master among historians; 5 stars really isn't enough since that rates ordinary books and his series of books covering history from the beginning of time to almost the present is head and shoulders above the rest. In this book he covers prehistory, the Middle East and the Far East, including India. The book include an opening/prologue which is a lengthy discussion of human society in general which, although a little outdated, is in itself worth the price of admission. Not that the rest of it isn't fantastic. Durant's writing is absolutely excellent, both lucid and often wryly witty. I can't count the number of quotable lines that I have heard in this book alone. The Greek and Roman volumes (which are also awesome) are equally good, and I intend to listen to every single of his audiobooks that I can get my hands on. The narrator for this one is a little dry but he does the job.
