I am guessing that the construction of these blades is such that it creates a vortex of wind that pulls the grass up, and keeps it inside the deck longer to be more chopped up. My deck IS NOT a mulching type, but these blades have really added to its ability to be more so.
The only slight downside (and simultaneous upside) to these blades is that they are a much heavier construction than the OEM blades - very beefy. That additional weight (and strength) puts more of a load on the PTO when engaged, so if the engine is not at high RPMS, it can stall. This is a minor inconvenience far outweighed by the performance of these blades.
I just mowed a fall lawn that was blanketed by leaves. In years past, I would be aiming the chute toward the center, then getting out the mulching handmower or the rake and dispensing with the pile of gathered leaves. Not this year, these blades made dust out of the leaves as I drove over them, and there was nothing left to clean up; not with another mower or a rake. Great choice in blades, after nearly an entire summer/fall season, they performed better than expected.
'just a comment...I can't even begin to guess how many hours are on this Craftsman garden tractor. I've had it since 1997. Kohler V-twin engine and have used Mobil 1.. It gets used all the time, instead of getting the bigger tractor out...just more convenient.
I cut three to five Acers twice a month, My Mom's Neighbor said He has never seen such a Even cut,
I own a 1995 Craftsman GT 6000 with a 20 HP Koller engine with a 50 inch Cut.
put it on 3/6 in Low and just ride it out.
Perfect every time.
Before they arrived a used a friends Craftsman "Professional Series" 28hp 54" triple blade mower with BRAND NEW "Craftsman" labeled blades to mow my lawn. They did decent but still left some uncut grass in the thicker areas.
Then, I installed these Oregon Gator blades on my old "outdated" AYP tractor and WOW they do some serious work. The "Gator teeth" really destroy the glass clippings into very small pieces making them much better for mulching. They made a normal style blade seem useless. They also seem to be more effective in the thick grass areas.
Buy this style if you're in between these and regular style blades. You'll be much happier.
