I learned more about qi from this book than from a decade of taijiquan lessons. It is the best introduction to energetics and body structure available, and is a must read for all taijiquan (tai chi chuan) and qigong (chi kung) students.
There are a number of "gems" in this book ... principles that most people miss in their study of taijiquan and qigong. These principles apply not only to the exercises given in the book, but to all styles of taiji or qigong.
This is the book, combined with Wong Kiew Kit's _The Complete Book of Tai Chi Chuan_ will give you the best introduction to Taijiquan available.

This book gets right to the core of chi kung. None of the readers time is wasted with useless movements or practices. I have 20 years of martial arts experience and this is the best book i have read on chi kung and chi developement. If you want to feel your chi, this is the place to start!

Anyone interested in Qi Gong should read this book. It is a lucid and and practical introduction as well as a great guide to beginning practice. Bruce has clearly spent many years studying, researching, and practicing the principles he teaches.

This book has taught me many things:

* How to start relaxing properly.

* How to dissolve inner tension and blockages within my energy flow.

* How to get sensitive for the health of the body, the state of its organs, everything.

* How to correct the unnatural things about the ways I walk or stand.

All within one book!

The standing inner energy work of Water Nei Gung by Bruce Frantzis - truely powerful. A trip into sensitivity for your own being, your body, how your mind relates to it. Releasing, detoxifying, truely relaxing.

The movement exercises that evolve from this stance: Cloud Hands. They teach you a lot how you stand and how much more energy could flow if you correct or use the potentials nature already has invested in you. They open the joints, enable more elegance and avoid strain. A reversal of how we tend to slouch through our days.

While the author writes in a clear, concise way, leaving out mystic stuff and always in a way Westerners can relate to it, sometimes he is too concise. Details is lacking, especially in sections that are already hard to understand - how to "go sung" (relax and get flowing) or dissolve a blockage. Here the author is overly metaphorical. And he does not discuss caveats and symptoms of and remedies for bad practice are often missing.

Overall: The technique taught - 10 out of 5 possible points ;) . Writing style - 3.5 out of 5. In the end this is still among the best ways this knowledge has been ever conveyed in a non-face-to-face form.

This is a really hands-on introduction which introduced me to the basics of Qigong. It contains a couple of practical exercises with clear advice and explanations. When I picked up this book, I knew nothing worth mentioning on the topic. Today, I am through my tenth book on the topic and practice daily. Of the four books I read from this author this was not only the first, it was also the only great book of the four I read.

On the downside, part of the book is advertising for the author's own web-site, training programs including a book only available from there on so-called Dragon and Tiger Medical Chi Gung. Not only is that book fairly expensive, I must admit that to me it was also very disappointing: It is advertised from the author's web site with the following: "In this manual, Frantzis provides in-depth instruction in Dragon and Tiger's physical movements, energy mechanics and breathing techniques, with more than 650 detailed illustrations.". Well, to be honest I was surprised when I found a simple thing as a drawing strip of many still-illustrations showing you how to swing your arms from e.g. one side to the other easily counts as tens of such so-called detailed illustrations. If this would have been a $ 10-20 book, I would have probably given it 3 stars, but for the $50 plus shipping, in hind-sight, a book on the Eight Section Brocade Qigong (Baduanjin) would give me more insight and value for money, in addition to a more generally recognized foundation in the theory.

Enough criticism! To sum up: if you're interested in getting started with Qigong and understanding what it's all about then buy this book - it is great value, an easy read and you'll probably find that you will pick it up again and again until you have squeezed every piece of information out of it. In spite of few shortcomings and somewhat overly promoted advertisements, I give it a full 5 stars!

Finally, a few study notes I wish I would have had with Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body, in hind-sight:
1) I strongly recommend that you follow the author's advice of seeking out others' advice as well if you want to take things further after reading the book.
2) A piece of information I learned from the Xingyiquan (=Hsing-I Chuan) internal martial arts which I would have liked to know of when reading Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body: one can claw the toes of ones feet into ground in the standing postures described in the exercises of the book to increase the foundation of 'a strong root'.

I strongly recommend this book for all who want comprehensive health, vitality, and want to take their health into their own hands. This is a WORKBOOK for the general public, but also has much, practical theory which is marvelously articulated. I have practiced the six exercises in this book for several months, and I feel like I'm getting physically younger every day (I'm 38 years old). These practices enhance bodily comfort, health, and physical performance in every way. The reader must put forth a sustained, regular effort, but this moderate effort is rewarded many times over. My health is now in MY hands, and I see that I don't have to grow stiff and weak as I age!!! If everyone used the material in this book, there would by a lot of unemployed doctors. I'm grateful to the author, B.K. Frantzis.

Danke an Bruce Frantzis
