Kurzbeschreibung

OPEN SECRETS grew out of a practical need to understand the human trafficking and witchcraft encountered during Cois Tine’s work with immigrants in Ireland. It provides a clear description of human trafficking, its causes, processes, effects, and of the violence and greed that lie at its heart.

Witchcraft is examined from the perspective of its history and its different manifestations in Europe and Africa. During the colonial era and into modern times, these manifestations have intermingled and influenced each other and now, in modern Ireland, they meet again in the violence of human trafficking. OPEN SECRETS is a must read for all who seek to gain an understanding of these issues.

HASH(0x9593c5dc) von 5 Sternen Witches & Slaves 27. August 2012

If you thought slavery and witches were from another era Open Secrets: An Irish Perspective on Trafficking & Witchcraft will dispel that myth! This book from Jennifer deWan and David Lohan is a must read for anyone trying to understand the problem of human trafficking. It combines academic research and first hand contact with migrants in Cois Tine a support Centre for migrants in Cork.
The book brings new insights into the role of witchcraft especially its role in the control of the victims of trafficking. Dr. deWan looks at how witchcraft in the African culture was a positive thing a `system of values that regulates human conduct' but today it is often used as a weapon `where `adults and children are illegally traded like commodities'. She explains how magic and witchcraft are used as oaths to bind trafficked or smuggled people to their traffickers and ensure they will not try to escape. De Wan points out that `misunderstanding can cloud our understanding of the cultural, spiritual and historical context for witchcraft beliefs and practices especially regarding African witchcraft that is happening in Ireland.' This book certainly brings new insights into the question of how the trafficker controls their victims who seem from the outside to be willing slaves i.e. labourers or prostitutes.
David Lohan looks at the situation of trafficking in Ireland and set it within the global problem of human trafficking which is estimated at 12.3 million victims. In Ireland there are about 1,000 women and girls working in prostitution at any one time charging 200 per hour. He reviews the legislation that is in place to deal with the problem. He highlights the link between prostitution, trafficking and money and concludes that it is with the' financial rewards that the exploration commences.' As well as case studies of victims Lohan shows a great empathy with the victims of sex trafficking and his chapter on Ungoing and Re-Doing the Self shows the complex needs of the victims well after they become free from their trafficker.
A welcome addition to our knowledge of the world inhabited by trafficked people in Ireland.

I did not have a clue about human trafficking from Africa and never thought witchcraft could be used as a psychological weapon. This book provided insight into the “What” and “Why” of human trafficking. The book mainly deals with trafficking into Ireland and Europe, but my thoughts throughout reading the book was the multitude of trafficking within North Korea must be incalculable. The authors write about “Modern-day slavery” of women and children, which is super because these issues should be “in the light” and exposed. I was disappointed that North Korea was never so much as mentioned. I challenge these two insightful authors to write a similar book exposing modern day slavery in North Korea.

“Open Secrets” is an intellectual expression of a compassionate commitment to human dignity. Many have stopped crying not because they have overcome their problems, but have been completely overwhelmed by their miseries.
I discover through the book that the human trafficking is too visible in our modern society to believe. It is important to understand the mechanism where the victims are left with the only choice of collaborating to the maximum with their offenders. Many of our State laws and attitudes add fuel to the fire. They attack the visible victim and protect the hidden offenders.
“Open Secrets” is an eye opener and a tool-kit to legislators, pastoral agents, and human rights activists. I congratulate the authors for their rigorous research, courageous objectivity and uncompromising respect for human dignity.

A good read for anyone interested in learning more about human trafficking; particularyabout how it continues to operate and the impact it has (emotionally and economically).
