'You don't have to be an architectural expert to enjoy this new book from Paul Archer Design. This comprehensive text features 26 house projects that the London-based architect has taken on, and as well as providing a showcase for Paul Archer's work, it also provides a more general take on the challenges of domestic architecture. As much of his work consists of updating existing buildings, the houses are ranged chronologically, in keeping with the book's title, and range from a seventeenth-century Jacobean farmhouse to a newbuild, both in Bristol. A decade separates these two projects - which, coincidentally, were both undertaken for his parents - and the sheer variety of the houses that sit in between show the capability and ingenuity of the practice. The houses are grouped by general themes, each of which has its own introduction. These provide useful nuggets of information, such as the section on cultural shifts in house design that reveals the changing trends in house design; namely the relationship between the house and garden, the kitchen as the modern focal point of the home, and the developing trend of using hotel design as an inspiration for luxurious bedroom suites. As well providing a detailed introduction to the work of this popular architect, Old to New also functions as a useful guide to the evolving aesthetic of the modern domestic interior.' House & Garden 'Perfectly Planned', Words by Catriona Gray. 'We're big fans of British architect Paul Archer, so much so that we ran a story on the incredible Green Orchard house he designed for his parents in our June 2013 issue. Naturally we were thrilled when Paul Archer Design put out the book Old to New: Houses by Paul Archer Design by Archer and Phyllis Richardson this spring.'
