HASH(0x8f8138c4) von 5 Sternen Wonderful suspense novel 1. Februar 2014
Von E. F. Farrell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Odin's Wake is a wonderful suspense novel filled with intrigue and mystery. The author is a former navy officer and engineer with tremendous insight into technical detail surrounding the mysterious sinking of a large fishing vessel in calm waters of the North Atlantic. Wonderfully written; technically detailed; a cliff hanger to the very end.

HASH(0x8f8152d0) von 5 Sternen And the wake it is... 2. April 2014
Von Skroller - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
After the quite wonderful R. W. Magill's Breathless Dead debut I've been waiting for his second book with, well... baited breath. And I have to admit that Odin's Wake is a perfectly acceptable and perfectly pedestrian D-list mystery.

This book seems to have been written by a different author altogether. Gone is the deep character development of the first novel, gone is the conversational tone with a subtle humor. And, it seems, the coherent plot has also gone down with the aforementioned ship. The book is populated with a multitude of cardboard characters who, for the most part, are given just enough background stories to make them look at least one dimensional (as opposed to being completely lifeless). All of them are also tangential, at best. Take any one of them out and the book will not lose anything. There're also two protagonists and the story vacillates uneasily between the two in an effort of determining which one should be the lead.

I think I figured Mr. Magill's weak spot: just like in the first book it is the reason for the crime. But while in Breathless Dead it was not so central to the plot and, in addition, offset by a masterfully fleshed out central character, here it is so glaringly boring it just defies belief - SPOILER ALERT - all this carnage for a dumb insurance scam? Really?

The ending could have been interesting, if also not perfectly predictable but then none of the characters were actually interesting enough to care if they make it in the end or not. So, there.

In a word - disappointed. You did such a great job with your first book, Mr. Magill, your second one just doesn't measure up.

HASH(0x8f815300) von 5 Sternen Quite good Page Turner ! 21. Januar 2014

I'll admit it, I'm a bit prejudiced. I am a Pacific North westerner. Although not a Seattle resident, the locale is well known by me.
Saying that, it's setting has little to do with my enjoyment of the book. It's a well done, exciting story. It has some "chinks" in it, but they are so unimportant to the story as to be forgiven. And it may be a bit predicable, but that's OK. We always want the Good Guy to win anyway, don't we ? I applaud Mr. Magill's work. There's lot of tension and some downright scary episodes. Dastardly villains and not a little blood. Good stuff ! I hope the writer continues doing this well on his other creations.
Well worth the money on Kindle !

HASH(0x8f81530c) von 5 Sternen Easy read 11. Januar 2014
Von gary levine - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I was turned on to Odin's Wake by a neighbor who works with the author. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by a polished, well-crafted story that pulled me in early with a nice blend of mystery, action and rising suspense. Mystery thriller fans will definitely find this one worthwhile.

HASH(0x8f8158b8) von 5 Sternen Good Author! 14. Januar 2014

Thrilling, suspenseful, and graphic. Well fleshed out, believable characters with a truly detestable villain. Hard to put down, especially during the second half. Definitely worth the read, though not for the faint of heart!
