Kurzbeschreibung

Halfdan and his master, Winston the Illuminator, are guests in a monastery when they’re awakened in the middle of the night and asked to solve a crime. A monk praying in the church has been brutally murdered, and his severed hand offers the first clue of a motive. As they investigate who could have committed such a heinous atrocity—and why—Halfdan and Winston must negotiate bitter rivalries within the monastery’s hierarchy, a sensitive class structure, and the tension between the new laws King Cnut has sworn to uphold and the codes of honor that precede them. With peace in England on shaky ground and the king’s favor of paramount importance, Halfdan and Winston follow a precarious path toward answers that no one is sure they want.

This second novel in Martin Jensen’s acclaimed King’s Hounds series delves deeply into a chaotic world where alliances change, but oaths are forever.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Medieval mystery with delightful characters 10. März 2014
Von Walking Woman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is the second book in Jenson's "The King 's Hounds" series. Too often the second in a series misses the magic of the first. "Oathbreaker" is a good match to the first book which lends its title to the series' name.

I enjoyed seeing Halfdan grow as a sleuth. The monks were thoroughly entertaining - the good and the bad.

My only complaint (and it is minor and not uncommon) was that the wrap-up on the murder seemed a bit unfair. Most readers will not have the knowledge to interpret the clues. My favorite mysteries are ones that challenge me to spot the clues and then piece them together. I felt the clues that solve this particular mystery were simply beyond the reader's reach for reasons I am not going to share as that would give it all away.

This is a fun book with well-written characters and great details about life in war-torn Britain 1,000 years ago. Jensen's abilities as a writer are excellent. Vivid descriptions had me craving roast pork and ale!

3.0 von 5 Sternen A Bit Disappointed 8. März 2014
Von Thomas More - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I gave a positive review to the first book in this series by Martin Jensen; however, this time around I feel that we readers have been let down a bit. Winston takes much more of a back seat to Halfden this time around, as the murder of a monk baffles the duo. I found the story much less compelling here, and recalled that the threat of the King's wrath added necessary tension to "The King's Hounds." I did enjoy the addition of Alfilda to the sleuthing pair, but wish her character could be given more to do than brood and stare out windows. Would it be a better series if the author took us into the minds and perspectives of the three central characters? I think perhaps so.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Good historical mystery 25. April 2014
Von Judith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
For some reason, I have problems with translated works, but this series by Martin Jensen, translated by Tara Chace, presents no problem and doesn't distract from the story, for the most part. I like the main characters very much and think the book shows a good deal of research on the author's part. Medieval England, before the Norman invasion is drawn believably and the endnotes help define what might be unfamiliar terms. If this book has one flaw, it's the translators occasional use of very contemporary terms. But, given the excellent story and overall absorbing mystery, that's a small hindrance. If you enjoy historical mysteries, or good mysteries at all, this book will make you a very happy reader.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The color Blue! 12. März 2014
Von Lynn Demsky - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this story immensely, was totally intrigued by the way of life then and how the people responded to it. Was amazed as to how much, except for the Oaths, the people sort of lived like we do! I fell in love with the little twelve year old girl that helped in the murder so much just by being the inquisitive little brat she was. She also put a lot of humor into the story. Also made me mindful of how the colors we have today --- they didn't have back then. Also how much more difficult it was to get all sorts of things that we just take for granted today! Also enjoyed how each village, farm shared what they had with most everybody! I had never heard of King Cult so also learned a lot --- helped me to understand "oaths" a lot more also. Good read!

5.0 von 5 Sternen ANOTHER GREAT READ 5. März 2014
Von Cass, Mildura, Australia - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Again Martin Jensen takes us back to 1016 (Prologue) on to 1018 where Winston and Halfdan find themselves caught up in yet another crime to solve. I don't believe in giving book reviews except to say if I enjoyed it or not. 5 stars should speak for itself. I am only sorry to learn that this is the last of our dynamic duo. Unless Mr Jensen could be encouraged to write some more. Like the first novel there is a history lesson here too.
