If the duet stopped working in 2004 after Smart and Johan decided to privilege their respective solo careers, Johan had the brilliant idea at this beginning of 2010 to reawaken this myth whom was Airscape.
For those to whom this name recalls absolutely nothing, they will just have to hear the boosted melodies and rhythmic of the track which made their fame, "L' Esperanza", the second track of the album.
This album is thus a mix between the former productions of the Belgian duet back to the mid-90s and the latest achievements specially planned for the occasion by Johan Gielen.
To begin this album, Johan delivers us the track which brought the revival of Airscape in the end of 2009, "My Love" produced together with the charming American singer JES also called "Queen of Rocktronica". It is a very calm vocal-trance track without big surges just as some songs that can be found on the new album of the singer, "High Glow" which will be commented in the days to come too.
The second track, "L' Esperanza", is as I previously said the one that made the Belgian duet's fame.
Produced in 1999, right in the golden age of trance, this mega hit did not take the slightest wrinkle and will remain for a long time a timeless hymn of trance music!
The following track "Faith" is a new production released in January 2010 in a very prog-trance register surrounded by an aura very deeper for a great musical moment. I really am fond of this track that I had never had the opportunity to listen to when i twas released in the beginning of the year and it will remain one of my favorite anthems of the album.
Another piece equally devastating and well known by all fans of trance, the exceptional "Pacific Melody" produced in 1997 with Peter Ramson who is found on one of the other tracks on the album, "Amazon Chant".
This production is also unforgettable and full of an outsized intensity which literally takes us to the furthest lands of trance for more than seven minuts, a true masterpiece!
Johan Gielen continues his overview with " Feel Alive I Like Do ", another new vocal-trance production realized in January, 2010 together with the singer Jennifer Hershman then with "Cruising", the oldest piece of the whole album which was conceived in 1993 by Mart Svenson, one year before Gielen joins him to form Airscape.
This version is still revisited in a very melodic and very well-made Scape Remix.
Other new production of this album, the magnificent "Not Today, Maybe Tomorrow" which enrolls in a purely chill out register and made me discover another facet of Gielen's production totally unknown to me and which shows how is dj is talented in the musical artistic creation.
The following track, "Sosei" is particular because while being remarkable, it is the last one produced by both djs and the one that marked the duo's separation in 2004.
This one also was stamped as a real trance anthem of its time and favored by the greatest djs at the time.
In continuity, Gielen goes on with"Certification", the last but one new production of the album which is in my taste the least accomplished of all the past realizations then with a classic of the duo from 1998, the masterful "Amazon Chant" in its original version.
This track is perfectly named because in listening with closed eyes, it is hard not to feel in a forest in the middle of nowhere.
To brilliantly conclude the birth of "Now & Then", Johan Gielen will deliver the very last new production he made for this album, the very progressive "Saints Ltd" which will close this new chapter of the Aircape's story.
I want to specify that some versions of the album contain four additional tracks which are one remix of "Sosei" by Alex O'Rion and three remixes of "Esperanza" by Svenson & Gielen, Tiësto and Armin Van Buuren.
To conclude, I will simply say that the realization of this album is a great idea Johan Gielen had and the alternating of the old and new productions impacts even more on the desired rebirth of this myth Aircape was.
And then who knows with time, maybe the two friends decide to make together a last lap of honor for the greatest pleasure of their fans.
