Während es Läden wie das Room at the Top in Wigan, Blackpool s Mecca und das Twisted Wheel in Manchester waren, die Northern Soul gross machten, ist die Ironie dahinter, dass es jemand aus dem Süden war, der den Namen erfand. Der Londoner Plattenhändler Dave Godin gebrauchte ihn, um in seinem Soul City Shop seine Platten zu stapeln und zu verkaufen. Diese Compilation ist in Anlehnung daran enstanden und beinhaltet Künstler wie The Showmen, Ronnie Love, The 5 Royales und The O'Jays.

Ich habe die LPs als Analog DJ vor allem wegen des ersten Stückes "The Snake" von Al Wilson bestellt. Die LPs klingen sowohl Zuhause, als auch im Club sehr gut. Allerdings fehlt mir in der Zusammenstellung noch ein zweiter Kracher....dann wäre sie perfekt

Yeah, dear ol' Mel Torme. God bless him. God bless HIM and his version of "Comin' Home Baby" which is found on just about every single lounge music/jazz vocalist compilation out there. Here we find Mel's tune on a 3 cd set that is basically black New Orleans R&B and funky early 60s rock'n'roll & doo-wop. Mel sticks out like a Ping-Pong ball in Harlem. Still. it's a good tune and somehow, even though I get sick of seeing it everywhere, I never tire of listening to it.

I bought this for the first track. "The Wrong Girl" by The Showmen and regret that their biggie "It Will Stand" is not on here as well. Still, there is plenty mo' Nawlins R&B.. Fats Domino, Irma Thomas and Charles Sheffield's "It's Yo' Voodoo Woikin'" to name but a few. More southern soul in the form of Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd.. so calling this compilation "Northern Soul All Nighter" kind of baked my noodle somewhat until I read that Northern Soul was some kind of British phenomena of the early 70s.. I'll have to study up on that but what I do know is that this is black music the way I like it. Foot-tappin', hook-laden... yet it still had an edge to it. 1960 to 1963 was a good time for this kind of stuff... it was a good time for country music as well.

A six-face digi-pack release with one page of liner notes and 3 pages of groovy pics of vintage record labels.. probably the very 45s the tracks on these 3 cds were mastered from... which brings me to the subject of sound quality. It's good for the main part. A few records seem like they have been played at many a party in the 1960s and sound slightly worn. One can make the excuse "well, it only adds to their charm" but I can do with less charm and more sound quality. Still, I reckon this is a good deal and I'm glad I bought it... but maybe I should turn down the treble on my stereo..
