"Hayes has spent the last 20 years recasting the ninja strategies into a self-defense framework more suited to the threats and experiences of modern societies, and The Ninja Defense serves as a well organized, accessible quick introduction to these techniques. [T]he uniqueness of Hayes's approach is how he has integrated them into a practical self-defense curriculum that is suitable for all body types and even psychological profiles. The Ninja Defense also comes with a DVD so that, indeed, these moves and skills can be practiced in the home." —Tallahassee Writers Association
"The contribution regarding the philosophy of martial art and what To Shin Do represents teaching which I feel has great value. The first six chapters as well as the last chapter were of particular interest to me as my own passion as an instructor and practitioner of martial arts always asks the questions on how to explain the mental aspects. Hayes and his editors I feel have done this very effectively, using relative and easy to understand terms with realistic but hypothetical situations to increase the readers understanding of these terms for practical use and further reflection." —Cyril Jackson, White Cat Publications

Full color pictures and perfect bookbinding workmanship! Pages are stitched, not glued. And then a 1 hour + DVD included... I am a happy camper!
Haven't read it by now, but knowing the author and his works since 30 years now, I know the content is great.

The book and DVD are about self defense, discouraging a continued attack from an aggressor, and not so much about 'finishing a fight.
I have studied Tai Chi for many years, and it's great for health, but its moves take a while to learn. These simple direct self-defense moves work in the right now situation, and that's why I plan to move on to Anshu Hayes's black belt series, starting with Mountains of Strength, and see what I can add to my knowledge base.
This is worth getting for a beginner, or perhaps someone who wants to learn a basic no -nonsense program that they might be able to use in any emergency.
There are many things to like about this book. Besides the clear instructions and the color photos showing each technique, this book also includes an excellent (almost 70 minutes) DVD which reinforces the techniques and tactics explained in the book. This makes the book a must have, not only for serious martial artists, but for also anyone interested in learning a simple and effective self-defense method.
The eleven chapters cover preparation for real threats, making the choice to fight, winning mentality, how danger escalates, defense postures, five phases of the fight, forward strikes and kicks, front arm captures and restraints, front body holds and restraints, captures and restraints from behind and why the ninja approach is better than the samurai. The DVD shows each technique numerous times and can serve as an excellent training aid. In conclusion, anyone interested in the martial arts and self-defense will benefit from reading this book and studying the DVD which comes with it.
