HASH(0x977495dc) von 5 Sternen Essential reading if you own or are buying the Nikon D3300 19. August 2014
Von Jeff Wignall - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
For years I taught a basic digital photography continuing-education class and one of the first questions that I would ask the class was, "How many of you have read your camera manuals?" Typically only a few hands would go up in the class. That's a scary sight for a photography teacher--it means either that they are unmotivated students or that the manual was too dull to tolerate. I don't think the issue was really laziness but rather the dryness and complexity of the manual. Camera manuals are written by a mix of technical writers and engineers and they (the books, not the authors) have about as much personality as a phone book--and they're usually far less interesting.

That's why books like the Wiley Digital Field Guides are so important in understanding your cameras and getting the most out of them. These books add a human element and they explain the camera controls in a very accessible and friendly way--and they are heavily illustrated, which most camera manuals are not (in fact, a lot of cameras are still shipped with manual on CD and they are pretty useless--who wants to sit at a computer reading a camera manual?). The goal of these guides is to humanize the mechanics of a particular model of camera but also to apply that information to real photography situations--and these books excel at doing both.

This particular book is written for the D3300, of course, which is an entry-level DSLR (and a very good camera for the price--a bargain, but I would also look at the D5500 which is a little pricer, but not much). The author does a great job of weaving technical camera explanations with photo technique and the book is well illustrated with quite a few of his own very nice images (as well as product shots and detail shots of cameras and lenses). The book begins with an extensive chapter on camera essentials (exposure mode, scene modes, focusing modes, etc.) and then takes you option-by-option through the various menu settings--a must chapter if you are to have any hope of milking the most out of this camera's capabilities. There are additional chapters on lenses and lens choice, exposure, working with light, using the various movie modes (which these days is half the reason people are buying a good camera), and then concludes with a good chapter on real-world shooting situations and subjects, including macro, action, portraits, night photography and concert photography (the author is a good concert photographer, so this is better than run-of-the-mill general info on shooting concerts) and the book concludes with a short chapter on post production.

I honestly think that if you are buying this camera, it's nuts not to spend a few extra bucks and buy this book--you will get so much more out of the camera and learn everything about it so much faster. And while these books are probably bigger than you'd want to carry around in a coat pocket, they will fit in a camera bag and I think they are extremely useful to have with you in the field (at least until you are comfortable with all the controls). My advice (this is the teacher speaking) is to sit down with this book and your camera and put hands on every control as it is described. Dropping the camera aside (wear the neck strap!) there's nothing you can do to harm the camera--you can reset anything that you change.

I really don't have any criticism to offer about these book (a few of the photos could have been reproduced better, but overall the reproduction is nicely done). For the price, a bargain and then some.

(Full disclosure: I am an author and have written a few books for Wiley in the past. I do not know the author and have never communicated with him in any way.)

HASH(0x9774f54c) von 5 Sternen Excellent for beginners and more experienced alike 26. Juli 2014

If all you're looking for is just a guide to the D3300, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Not only does it do a nice job of introducing and explaining the various camera features, but it also goes into more general application information also. There is excellent explanation and guidance on lens selection, including what works and what does not work with this camera. Beyond that, as noted on the back of the book, there are many different tips on exposure, types of photography, etc. Particularly for someone relatively new to photography, and particularly to digital cameras, this book goes well beyond just the specific model basics. Since the Amazon Description does not seem to have any of the interior of the book available for inspection, here are the chapter headings:

1 - Exploring the Nikon D3300 [physical features of the camera]
2 - Nikon D3300 Essentials [significant detail on various modes, controls, file formats, etc.]
3 - Setting up the Nikon D3300 [details and use of the various menus]
4 - Selecting and Using Lenses with the Nikon D3300
5 - Controlling Exposure
6 - Working with Light
7 - Working with the Live View and Video Modes
8 - Real-World Applications [various types of photography, scenarios, etc.]
9 - After Capture [viewing images, folder structure, adjustments/corrections, etc.]
Appendix A - General Composition Tips
Appendix B - Accessories

In other words, this is far more than just "which button/dial does what" or how to use the various elements in the viewfinder.

It's hard for this family to give a 5-star rating, because we don't want to contribute to "review inflation" on Amazon. But in this case, a 5-star rating seems well deserved. I expect to get much more out of my new camera, much quicker, and perhaps a good review of things I've forgotten (or even not learned) over the years.

HASH(0x972973f0) von 5 Sternen An excellent reference but a bit too bulky and wordy for a Field Guide 7. August 2014
Von Gabriel's Buddy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is an excellent reference for the D3300. In the first several chapters they go into great detail about all the physical buttons and displays on the camera, then the various modes available, details on how to set things up, then great info about lenses and general information on how to take various kinds of pictures. I thought this was going to be a generic book with some D3300 details tacked on the front and back but I think the author did a good job referencing the D3300 where it was relevant. (Even the amazon description is for the Nikon N1, which I thought was odd, as if they just copied the same book over.)

The author makes a good case for the D3300 being a superb camera and I was glad to hear of all the advanced features relevant to much higher end cameras and even the D5300, which one would have thought was inherently superior.

This gets four stars because it is more of a reference book than a "Field Guide". This is a sit on the couch with some tea and your camera in front of you and spend hours getting through it. If you do, you will learn a great deal about you camera. But this is a bit too big to fit in the camera bag (perhaps 8.5" x 5.5") and there isn't a quick reference about what to do in specific cases. For example, you can look up what to do when a persons in front of the window and read that section, but it isn't quick and obvious. I imagined something smaller that would show the case and have summary information about aperture, F-stop, shutter speed, automatic mode, etc so one could get the picture if you only had a minute.

HASH(0x9774f468) von 5 Sternen For getting the most from your camera... 15. November 2014
Von Farm Chick - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
An excellent guide that goes way beyond what your (sometimes confusing) manual tells you! I have been using Nikon cameras for quite awhile, and have learned many new tips thanks to this field guide. I purchased a D3300 as a travel and easy "go to" camera for situations when I don't want to bring along my pro equipment. This guide covers virtually every question you could possibly have about using the camera and offers some very helpful hints for how to get away from auto settings (or at least take advantage of semi-auto). I originally purchased this book so that my hubby and son could use the guide when they want to borrow my camera. They both have found it extremely helpful. This book really is a compendium of all of the features of the D3300 rather than a field guide. It would be best to study it rather than use it out in the field. Even so, you won't find yourself needing more books about understanding your camera. On the contrary, the author has included every possible detail and situation you'll be confronted with. In addition, you'll find some easy to understand suggestions for using various lenses (from a variety of different companies), use of lighting, accessories such as extension tubes, filters, tripods and more. Very handy for the beginner! I can also recommend this book for the seasoned D3300 owner, I'm sure you will discover some gems of info that will help your photography skills. All in all an excellent book that is well written, has excellent full color photos and illustrations, and is easy to use & understand. Highly recommended, particularly for the new owner of the D3300.

HASH(0x9774f54c) von 5 Sternen A good guide for the Nikon D3300 DSLR 17. November 2014
Von Sussman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
The Nikon D3300 DSLR is a feature rich entry level DSLR. It has a number auto modes, semi auto and creative modes as well as full manual. It is also very at capable at taking HD quality video. I needed a text that would help a complete novice be able to enable the user to decipher this, at times complex, camera and to achieve the best that possible results with what this very capable DSLR has to offer. I must say I was not disappointed. The book is well illustrated with photo examples, diagrams and has very well written text. This rather helpful guide walks you through, using a step by step approach through the basics, and gets you started off on the right foot. The Nikon D3300 offers full control over exposure settings, but it also includes presets and auto mode options, and it is useful to know when these are the most appropriate and when they are to be used.

This is good book that really helps the user get the best possible out of the Nikon D3300 DSLR. This is the first time I have referred to one of these field guides - but if ever I get another DSLR or SLR for that matter - I am certainly getting one of these guides to go with it.
