NALINI SINGH – SECRETS AT MIDNIGHT

5 Sterne.

ILONA ANDREWS – MAGIC STEALS

5 Sterne.

+++

LISA SHEARIN – LUCKY CHARMS

Was soll ich sagen?

Spielt in SF ungefähr zur Zeit von " Shield of Winter", also relativ aktuell. Gut geschrieben, schöne Geschichte und glaubhafte PErsonen. Five Stars
Three Stars
Four Stars
Three Stars

Insgesamt 3 , 5 Stars

November 2014
Von Jen (Red Hot Books) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Usually, any given anthology I come across will have just one or two stories I am interested in. But with this one, I hit the motherload, with stories from three of my very favorite authors: Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, and Meljean Brook (writing as Milla Vane). I didn’t love every story equally, but overall, I think UF/ PNR readers will get enough bang for their buck.

Secrets at Midnight: I am such a fan of Nalini Singh and her Psy-Changeling world, but this novella was not a hit for me. It had some good things going on, but there were some parts that really fell flat.

The hero is Bastien, one of Mercy’s brothers. He wasn’t really looking to settle down, but once he encountered his mate’s scent, he knew he had to find her. He tracked her for days, before meeting her in a totally convenient and contrived happenstance. She seems to be human, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out she is part changeling. Kirby and Bastien fall for 0ne another as they work to solve the mysteries of her heritage and her past.

I found this story to be fairly predictable. But my biggest issue was with the dialogue between Kirby and Bastien. They try to be sexy and saucy, but it was missing Singh’s usual magic. Not sexy at all.

Where the story is at its best is when Kirby finally finds herself and gets to interact with her family. That actually made me a little misty. But the rest? Not so much. It wasn’t bad, but I have loved other stories from her much more.

Magic Steals: Jim and Dali. How do I love thee? This is such an understated, wonderful couple. Ever since we first got a taste of the Jim and Dali connection in their (way too short) “Magic Dreams” novella, I have been impatiently waiting for a chance to see them together again. This story satisfied me in every way. It follows Dali, with Jim at her side, as she uses her special Indonesian mojo to fight an evil manifestation targeting folks who share a common business building. The magic plot, though, is only a vehicle to show us Dali in her element –and how she and Jim finally stop tiptoeing around their relationship.

I love how insecure Dali is and how we see her utter adoration of Jim. She views him so differently than Kate does, but through her 1st person POV, we see such a different man. This Jim is awesome. He is so good to her. Watching her finally realize the depths of his feelings is so gratifying. And the end is perfect. (Plus… sex.) Made of win.

Lucky Charms: This is the only story in the group by an author I have never read before, but I really enjoyed this set up for Lisa Shearin’s SPI Files urban fantasy series. It follows a seer named Mac who is giving up her civilian life to join a supernatural policing agency. Her first assignment is helping to track down a leprechaun prince and his buddies who escaped a protection detail at a bachelor party. The story is funny and fast paced with an engaging cast of character. I will definitely be checking out The Grendel Affair.

The Beast of Blackmoor: I love Meljean Brook and I was totally psyched for this barbarian “beast” story. It was pretty dark and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. The story centered on Kavik, a warrior forsaken by the goddess he offended in his youth –and Mala, a champion of the same goddess, on a quest for her favor. Mala’s mission puts her squarely in Kavik’s path and it doesn’t take long to discover that their destinies are intertwined. There is some pretty heavy stuff here: rape, torture, and the like. And parts seemed pretty bleak. But the sexy times were very hot and the HEA was satisfying. — I leave the story conflicted, but affected, so take that as you will.

Overall, I think is definitely an anthology worth checking out!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great anthology 25. November 2014
Von Barb - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Night Shift is an anthology with novellas by 4 authors…Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, Milla Vane and Lisa Shearin. Each of these authors either write Paranormal or Urban Fantasy. It is always difficult to write a review on anthologies, as there is too much risk of giving out spoilers. I will attempt to give you my thougths of each story, without telling too much

Secrets at Midnight by Nalini Singh – Ohhhh, what can I say. This is a Psy/Changeling novella and Bastien is our leopard hero. I am a freak when it comes to Psy/Changeling, and needless to say I was in my glory reading this story. Nalini never fails to amaze me at how story after story, even in a novella she can give us such a great story, a fabulous couple, and allow us to spend time with some of our old favorites, like Lucas, Dorian & Mercy. Bastien was wonderful, as I fell in love with him from the start. He was loving, and patient with Kirby, our heroine. What mother wouldn’t want a Bastien for their daughter. Kirby was a fantastic mate for Bastien, and the story introducing her and her history was wonderful. When Bastien meets Kirby, he scents a cat, but she is human. It is Bastien who will help Kirby discover the hidden truth about her true destiny. A super fantastic story. When I finished this book in one sitting, I had a smile on my face the rest of the day.

Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews – I am a big fan of Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, so I was looking forward to reading this one too. Jim is our hero in this book, and he has been one of the mainstays in this series. Jim is a Jaguar shifter, and Curran’s security chief. It was great for him to have his story, and I loved him with Dali, who is Tiger shifter. We started off with Dali preparing dinner for Jim, hoping this would be the night that they would take the next step. Before anything can happen, Dali’s mother comes to ask her to help find a missing person. Jim goes with Dali, who has magic abilities to help solve crimes or end curses. The mystery was very good, with a group of people ina certain section having attacks brought on by magic. Jim and Dali must find out why and how to stop it. But the best part of this story was the humor between Dali’s family; Jim watching Dali use her magic, and learning more how she works, and Dali seeing how much Jim truly feels about her, and how well they will work together as a team. It was a great story, with a great couple, and just plain fun.

Lucky Charms by Lisa Shearin – I have not read this author before, so I was not sure what to expect. This is part of her SPI Files series, which only has one book out. Since I did not read the first book, I am not sure if this novella will move forward or is it a prequel. SPI stands for Supernatural Protection & Investigations. There are all kinds of supernatural beings in this story, with seers, werewolves, vampires, dragons, goblins, leprechauns, elves, fae, as well as humans. Mac (Makenna Frazier) is a seer, and she is hired by SPI to help find missing supernatural beings. On her first day of the job, she is pulled into a dangerous mission, meets her hot partner, and team members, who are elves or werewolves. Though there were so many dangerous situations, there was a lot of humor in this story. This was a fun and exciting read, which has me interested to see what else is in store for this series.

The Beast of Blackmoor – Milla Vane (Meljean Brooke) – An angry young warrior asking a priestess for the goddess help to fight evil, is cursed by his disrespectful behavior. Years later, a female warrior arrives in Blackmoor to fulfill her quest from the goddess to tame the beast.

Mala is our heroine, and she is determined to complete the quest given to her by the goddess, so that she can go home and protect her family and townsfolk. Mala is a great warrior, who has faith that her goddess will protect her along the way. The beast is the warrior who has been been “forsaken” yet he battles the monsters to help the town. Kavik is our hero, and when Mala meets him, he is cold, but knows she is the one who will end his curse. When Mala tells him she is to tame the beast, which is him, he expects the taming to be cruel, and refuses to believe otherwise. Together, despite his mistrust, they must fight the evil creatures, and Kavik must learn to find a way to trust Mala and change the curse. Good story, however there some parts I did not care how it was handled.

Overall, this was a great anthology, and for me, I was thrilled to get more of Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews, as well as learning about two other authors to check out for the future.

3.0 von 5 Sternen THREE GOOD STORIES 26. November 2014
Von Granny to 3 Boys - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Actually this would be a 3.75 stars. I enjoyed the first 3 books; and hated the last one.

I'm glad Nalini Singh toned down her sex scenes somewhat in "Secrets at Midnight". I enjoyed this one.

I purchased this anthology just because of the Ilona Andrews story "Magic Steals". I loved this one, and had a big grin
on my face at the end.

I hadn't read anything by Lisa Shearin before "Lucky Charms". I enjoyed this one; but found it a little hard to follow at the beginning.

"The Beast of Blackmoor" started out slowly and was fairly boring. When it got to scenes of disgusting sexual practices, I was done.
I usually make myself finish a book I've started; but I couldn't force myself to finish this one. I don't understand why it was even included in this anthology. The time period wasn't contemporary as the first 3 were; and the tone was dark and completely the opposite of the others. I won't read anything more by this author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Every story's a winner! 30. November 2014
Von Kate Douglas - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Every story in the Night Shift anthology is a five-star read--I'm a huge fan of Nalini Singh's, and bought this because I never miss anything she writes, but Ilona Andrews' story is amazing, too, and her world-building absolutely fascinating. I've never read Lisa Shearin before, but will definitely be looking to see what she's got out there--lots of humor and great action, and again, terrific world-building, but the biggest treat of all was Milla Vane's story. I am a huge Meljean Brook fan--love her Iron Seas, but I think I love her gritty Milla Vane writing even more. Hard to say--I do know I'll be reading the entire anthology again, but I still can't say which story is my favorite--they all are! I definitely recommend this collection to anyone who loves really well-written, captivating paranormal romance. Did I say every single story is wonderful?

4.0 von 5 Sternen Four solid authors in a nice steamy little collection 2. Dezember 2014
Von Stephanie V - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Collections can sometimes be a mixed bag. I bought this book solely for the Psy/Changeling story by Nalini Singh, so if the rest of the stories weren't to my liking, I still would have been happy to have it. This is a very solid collection of stories by four talented authors, and I'm glad I've given a few new (to me) authors a try. Although to be fair, I have read other works by Milla Vane/Meljean Brook, so only Lisa Shearin and Ilona Andrews were completely new to me. My favorite story was the Psy/Changeling one, simply because I find Bastien charming and gallant, although Kirby wasn't my favorite heroine of the series. But Lisa Shearin's leprechaun story was fun and fast, and I will definitely give that series a try. Vane's entry was a lot darker in tone (a LOT darker and very rapey) so it was harder to get into it following the lighter tale that preceded it, but it was also a solid story and some great world-building. My least favorite was Ilona Andrews' story, because it was obviously part of a larger world that I wasn't familiar with, so it didn't seem to stand alone very well to me. I didn't really feel the connection between the two lead characters in this short of a story, and a lot of the magic didn't make much sense without a larger context. (Of course, the same can probably be said of Nalini Singh's story, but since I am familiar with that series, it wasn't jarring to me. But a non-fan might not feel the same way.)

Overall, it's a really solid collection, and some great storytelling. Well worth it!
