'..a celebration of canvas work and the potential fo embroiderers working on evenweave background canvas'. Workbox magazine

Synopsis

Canvaswork is a traditional technique that is currently undergoing a creative renaissance - embroiderers are discovering new and innovative ways to use it, both on its own and in conjunction with other popular embroidery techniques. Acclaimed embroiderer Jill Carter explores these new trends in this book, which is both a practical guide to canvaswork techniques and a showcase for some of the best work being made today. The author suggests new twists on this traditional technique that will add sparkle and individuality to your own work, including how to use new background fabrics, threads and other materials. The work covers: backgrounds; texture; paper; sheer fabric; ribbon; painted fusible webbing; machine stitching; freestyle canvaswork; and, drawn and pulled thread.

I completely agree with the other reviewer: this is an outstanding book. I have several other books by Jill Carter like:

Beginner's Guide to Hardanger
The Stitching Book: The All-You-Need-to-Know Guide to Surface Stitching
Embroidered Heirlooms: To Make and Treasure
Hardanger Embroidery

And I heartily recommend this brilliant artist. There has been a spate of needlework books recently that are aimed at inspiring us to design our own pieces. Having left the fluffy bunny stage a long time ago, I am hearkening in that direction. Some of these books are much more daunting than helpful. It all just looks too hard, is too edgy and "out there." But this book is one of the good ones. See the Table of Contents for something you might want to try:

Background Surfaces (or Treatments)
Colour, Design and Stitch
Couching on a Canvas Background
Embroidery Stitches on Canvas
Applying Objects onto a Canvas Background
Drawn-Thread Techniques on Canvas
Pulled Thread on Canvas
Machine Embroidery on Canvas
Beads and Stitches on Canvas
Background Stitching for Canvas Work
Finishing Techniques

I'm really annoyed at Amazon's draconian decision to prevent customers from uploading images on books. I wish I could show you several of the pages here of glorious color and stunning designs that turn out to be not too complicated. The color combinations alone draw me further and further into the book as I linger over samplers of the various techniques by professional needle artisans. This is not a project book so don't be disappointed if there is no graph and list of materials for each piece of needlework art inside. But the crisp color close-ups of the stitching is so clear, you'll be able to build up a repertoire of stitches and ideas in no time. So intermediate and, especially, advanced stitchers will get the most out of this book. But I would also give it to a raw beginner just to whet her appetite.

Jill Carter's innovative approaches to using traditional techniques with contemporary materials really inspires. She offers ways to color the foundation canvas (e.g. painted fusible web, transfer paints, etc)and choose different yarns/threads/fibers to interpret abstract imagery as well as incorporates beads and embroidery stitches to embellish. Needlepoint stitches are illustrated but this book focuses on techniques to explore rather than step-by-step project demonstrations. Samples of her and fellow artists' work are real eye candy.
