Kurzbeschreibung

In Detail

GNS3 is an open-source Graphical Network Simulator used extensively by networking professionals to simulate networking devices such as Cisco, Juniper and Vyatta routers, along with Virtual PCs.

GNS3 Network Simulation Guide gives you all the information you need to run a successful GNS3 simulation. You will be guided through the tricky installation pre-requisites and procedures involved in developing a simulated topology suitable for studying for Cisco CCIE Certification. We will also cover many useful tips and tricks which will help you make the most of your GNS3 simulator application.

You will begin the GNS3 journey by ensuring that you have prepared your computer with any additional files required by GNS3, to set up the simulated environment needed for a successful installation process.

Once GNS3 is installed, you will get to work creating a successful simulation including routers, Ethernet switches, Virtual PCs, and capture packets using Wireshark. Next, you will learn how to master GNS3’s Graphical User Interface as well as the Command Console. The inner workings of GNS3 are described in depth so that you gain an appreciation of how UDP tunnels are used to tie the many components of GNS3 together.

By following the clear examples and exercises in this guide, you will learn everything that you need to know about how to use GNS3 to prepare for certifications, as well as simulate real-world network scenarios.

Approach

GNS3 Network Simulation Guide is an easy-to-follow yet comprehensive guide which is written in a tutorial format helping you grasp all the things you need for accomplishing your certification or simulation goal.

Who this book is for

If you are a networking professional who wants to learn how to simulate networks using GNS3, this book is ideal for you. The introductory examples within the book only require minimal networking knowledge, but as the book progresses onto more advanced topics, users will require knowledge of TCP/IP and routing.

"RedNectar" Chris Welsh

"RedNectar" Chris Welsh likes to share knowledge, so it's no surprise that he spends most of his time teaching, some of his time consulting and too much of his time on forums and blogs. The teaching is mainly Cisco related (he became a CCSI in 1998), the consulting is through his own company (Nectar Network Knowledge) and his blog (http://rednectar.net), along with his contributions to the GNS3 Forum (http://forum.gns3.net), became the inspiration to write this book. To keep his sanity, he likes to go for long walks in bushland, particularly around the National Parks near his hometown of Sydney, Australia.

HASH(0x9c4973cc) von 5 Sternen Very good guide for a beginner, intermediate, or instructor. 24. Februar 2014
Von Songsmythe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I have used GNS3 for years so when I read this guide I tried to look at it from a beginner's level. The information was clear and concise. It leads the reader through the installation process step by step and explains the components thoroughly giving helpful suggestions. It builds upon basic knowledge very quickly. For instance, most GNS3 users only use routers for their IP data endpoints. Chris also shows you how to use the Virtual PC Simulator (VCPS) capabilities of GNS3 to do this and his approach scales well.

After mapping out some of his suggested techniques I felt the true test of his guide would be to use it with true beginners. I am a senior network engineer for a global IT architectural design, maintenance, and troubleshooting organization with 15 new to relatively new engineers under my supervision. Over the past two months I have conducted training exercises using GNS3. I used Chris's guide as the starting point in training my charges. The scenarios I put my engineers through were either self created or pulled from various internet sources such as gns3vault.com.

Because of the level of detail of Chris's guide, my engineers were able to quickly grasp the capabilities of GNS3, create the topologies, and add the configurations so they can run through the design and troubleshooting scenarios I have prescribed with a minimum of input from me. When you work with a student or engineer one on one you have plenty of time to ensure that any misconceptions are re-mediated, but when you work with 15 at once it is a great asset to have a guide such as this one.

I have not taught my engineers everything I intend to, but how can you in only two months. Still, Chris Welsh's "GNS3 Network Simulation Guide" has enabled me to teach networking concepts more quickly and easily than I would have otherwise been able.

I highly recommend this guide to any networking beginner, intermediate, or instructor.

HASH(0x9b450984) von 5 Sternen GNS3 official recommendation 2. September 2014
Von Jeremy Grossmann - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I am the Creator / Co-Founder of GNS3 and I would highly recommend all GNS3 users including experienced ones to read this book.

GNS3 has a steep learning curve regardless of the individual's experience and Chris does a great job of guiding the reader step-by-step to show how to install, configure and enhance GNS3 in order to create complete labs, which include: ASA firewalls, Linux hosts, Juniper and Vyatta routers.

Chris provides helpful tips throughout his book that even I learnt something! He also covers how to connect your virtual network devices to your local network and how GNS3 works 'under the hood'. Therefore I have no problem highly recommending this book and know it will assist all GNS3 users in becoming more familiar and efficient using the software.

I was coming to gns3 cold and this book did a fantastic job of getting me up and moving with what can be a complex subject. Be aware that gns3 has changed much in its last few iterations. Some steps from the book will not align directly to the current gns3. I don't see this as a fault of the book, I was able to fill in the pieces.

The author is also active on the gns3 forums and he really knows his stuff.
