A young teacher vanishes in the middle of the night. Her husband comes home late to find his wife gone and his 4-year-old daughter alone in their highly fortified house in South Boston. The police assume that the husband killed her.

I's a pretty interesting storyline. There are enough surprises and twists to keep you reading. My problem was the ending, I found it a bit of a letdown. It's as if the author had all these facts and didn't quite know how to tie them together. I felt it was all a bit rushed compared with the rest of the book when you were having revelations little by little.

All in all I would recommend the book since it was quite entertaining, but I did find the ending unsatisfactory.

Gerade einmal 3,01. Für ein Buch gar nicht schlecht.

Ich würde es wieder kaufen.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding mystery! 16. April 2017

DD is a Sargent working homicides. There is no romantic relationship to fill her nights and weekends, so she works long hours and wishes she had a fella. Thus, she gets a call about a missing woman who is young, a mother, a wife and a teacher. Both she and her husband have horrible memories of torture by their families during their childhood.

They met and escaped from her father refusing to have any further contact. The husband had received an inheritance when he turned 18 and left home having no further contact with his family. They loved him but did not know how to incorporate him into the family after he had been abducted and tortured for years.

The couple had a beautiful and precocious 4 year old daughter whom they love and are focussed on raising her well. But the marital relationship is lacking due to their childhood traumas.

The beautiful young woman is a first year teacher of 6th graders. She enjoys it but takes her away from her daughter during the day. Fortunately the older husband is a reporter for the local paper and is able to work at night. Thus the girl has full time parent care.

Problems arise when the wife started taking "spa" days where she let's her wild side be indulged. Then she became concerned NY the husbands computer activities. In trying to gain computer skills she acquires overly zealous help that led to her disappearing. Which led to. Criminal investigations and complex potential perpetrators.

A great read that keeps you wondering and for some is a lack of slee
5.0 von 5 Sternen Secrets between neighbors 25. Juli 2014

Lisa Gardner returns with a dynamite book about neighbors with dark secrets. One is the Jones residence, who go the extra mile not to stand out. The other is a registered sex offender, Aiden Brewster. When mother and wife Sandra Jones goes missing and may possibly be dead, Sergeant Detective D.D Warren is called in. But husband and father, Jason Jones refuses to cooperate with the investigators. What does Jason have to hide? And what part does Aiden play? Is there a chance that Sandra Jones ia still alive? Read to find out.
The Neighbor is as thrilling as any of Lisa Gardner's previous entries. Sergeant Warren is the investigator and one of four protagonists. As shown in Alone and Hide, she is a dedicated detective who takes her job seriously. She has a sense of style, an appetite and can be sexually frustrated. Something that struck me the most was reading about Aiden Brewster, a registered sex offender. This one will keep you guessing and turning the pages untill it explodes with excitement. What happened inside that South Boston home the night Sandra Jones disappeared? Are one of these neighbors the monster responsible or is there another evil lurking in the shadows?
3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting Read 2. Juni 2016

I purchased this book for $5.99 back on September 5, 2010 but only recently got around to reading it. I don't know what compelled me to purchase the book back then, but I'm glad I did. The author, Lisa Gardner, combines writing in 3rd person and 1st person in this book. Switching between points of view can be dangerous unless you really are an adept writer. Lisa Gardner pulled it off in spades. Since the writing style of this book isn't what we're used to reading, I went to the reviews on Amazon to see what other readers thought. I always like to focus on the worst reviews first, since I feel like the lower reviews are more real and contain more information. There were indeed comments about the switching of points of view - all negative. I guess most readers don't enjoy the jumping back and forth. And I will admit that it is hard to follow, but once again, I found the writing style interesting and well done. The basis for most of the low reviews was, however, the readers' profound dislike for the lead character, Sergeant Detective D. D. Warren. I wholeheartedly agree with the comments made in the one and two star reviews . . . the lead character is extremely unlikeable and to be totally honest - she's a b***h. I dislike her immensely and therefore won't be reading any more "D.D. Warren" books. Plus, she's dumb at her job and adds absolutely nothing to the plot. Poor main character, Lisa Gardner!!!! The book could easily have been a five star book had the lead character contributed something. The plot is centered around two tortured souls who are married and have a child called Ree (???) - the child's name is Clarissa Jane Jones. The father, "Mr. McDreamy" Jason Jones, is a wimpy, quiet, introverted man that just sits around watching his daughter, while the case builds against him. Even so, I liked Jason and felt sorry for him throughout the book. There's a hint given towards the end as to why Jason's behavior is so abnormal, but it is never clearly stated. I still wonder what happened to Jason Jones as a child.
His beautiful wife, Sandy goes missing creating the main plot thread. Sandy is another tortured soul who makes stupid decisions but her backstory is revealed towards the end of the book, allowing you to justify her behavior (sort of). Just about the time I got tired to not knowing what the hell happened with everyone, the author wraps things up rather quickly. Other reviews didn't like the quick wrap-up, but I was OK with it since I was utterly exhausted with the slow moving plot. The saving grace for me was the interesting writing style of the author, which I think Lisa Gardner pull off quite well. Three stars for this book that could be a five star effort. (P.S. The grammar was OK in this book except in the areas written in italics . . . periods were continually omitted. The book needs better editing.)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Very suspenseful 6. Juli 2011
Von Robin Landry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Lisa Gardner can write suspense like few other authors, but the ending of this particular book, The Neighbor, left me scratching my head at the end. The story starts off with a bang. Young, beautiful, mother/teacher, disappears one night, leaving her handsome, reporter husband, and their 4 year-old daughter one night. There are no signs of forced entry, no note, and no reason to suspect foul play.

Gardner ratchets up the suspense with every clue, leading the reader on a twisting and turning road that leaves you breathless with suspense. I literally could not put this book down, but then again, all of Gardner's book are great. She gives us real, three dimensional characters with their demons intact, haunting their daily life to the point that you wonder how Boston's Finest manage to get anything done.

Detective D.D. Warren suspects Jason Jones because of his seeming nonchalance at his wife's disappearance, not to mention the man's thousand-yard-stare. As the story progresses, we learn that the young couple's marriage is one of convenience and that their daughter is not his. Then we learn that Sandra Jones had a very wild past, while her husband had a past that is even more mysterious.

Gardner had me spellbound with the Neighbor, yet the way she wrapped it up, left me with more questions than answers. I felt like the can of worms Gardner opened with her ending made me want another book just to explain what made Sandra Jones do what she did at the end.

I would have liked to give this book 4 1/2 stars because it was so good until the ending, but the ending really is the point of a suspense novel. Regardless, I will keep reading anything Lisa Gardner writes because she's just so good at what she does.

All I can say is Lisa wrote a great thriller! I love all of her books, but towards the end when the truth came out, I sat reading, mouth agape, saying WTF? I love when that happens. So I highly recommend this book. If you like criminal mystery thrillers, you will find that this one is 5 stars!
