Isabelle Legeron was the first French woman to become a Master of Wine, and was named Wine Woman of the Year 2009 in Paris. She runs the highly successful RAW Natural Wine Festival in London's Borough Market, and advises various restaurants on their wine lists, including the Michelin 2* Hibiscus. She contributes to Decanter magazine, and organizes conferences and tastings to promote natural wine. The author is based in London.

This book is explaining the natural wine movement in a fairly simple way, from how the grapes are grown to how they are treated, and the different approaches. And one of the best things is that it contains a huge list of must try wines as well.. As a bit of a rookie in this exciting world, it's a great start. Cheers!
It is true, the book is not written neutrally, it is written with passion and is, even though rarely written in the first person, an autobiographic journey into wine, into wine she really loves. The author has a clear position: she does not drink wines other than natural wines anymore (as far as this is possible for someone in the profession…). That might seem ideological to a certain extend but coming from someone who was born into a (conventional) wine family, who pursued a career in (conventional) wine and who, as Master of Wine, knows a great deal about the (conventional) world of wine (Isabelle Legeron is the only French woman ever to have become a Master of Wine), it is – to say the least – an informed decision.
Isabelle Legeron does not judge the wines she no longer likes but instead explains why she loves those that she does, telling how they were made in the vineyard and in the cellar. And, given these are wines primed by the personalities that make them, Isabelle writes adorably about the people who make these wines in their gardens of beauty (many of whom have become her friends on her personal journey to find the wines she loves, which, for sure, is not neutral but congenial…). She gives place to their respective philosophies and nourishes the book with their ideas and visions, making it a book of a new generation of wine growers.
Wine is never neutral, great books neither. Many will caress this book as their new bible of wine, others will not; no need for schisms.
A friend. Someone who is working to make a difference in the wine world. A huge contributor to the understanding of Natural Wines through her RAW Faires in London.
And the author of this lovely book.
She starts by sharing an epiphany.
While viewing the manicured landscape from her friend’s house in Cornwall one weekend, she realized that the perfect picture was truly an image of agricultural decline, not pristine beauty. An example of the destructive effects of monoculture to the natural health of the land. And our food and wine as well.
Her book is a rallying cry to the core benefits agricultural biodiversity. A dive into the science of the soil and a straight on debunking of a series of myths around the use of sulfur, cultured yeast and additives in wine making.
It drew me in from the start.
You may not agree with it all. You will absolutely learn a great deal about agriculture and winemaking.
You will also be bowled over by her passion for the topic and her huge heart for the natural winemakers who are changing our view of what constitutes a great wine in today’s world.
And I promise you will be thankful for the section of the book with descriptions of over 100 recommended natural wines to track down and drink.
