The Definitive Guide to Using, Programming, and Administering MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 MySQL is an open source relational database management system that has experienced a phenomenal growth in popularity and use. Known for its speed and ease of use, MySQL has proven itself to be particularly well-suited for developing database-backed websites and applications. In MySQL, Paul DuBois provides a comprehensive guide to using and administering MySQL effectively and productively. He describes everything from the basics of getting information into a database and formulating queries, to using MySQL with PHP or Perl to generate dynamic web pages, to writing your own programs that access MySQL databases, to administering MySQL servers. The fourth edition of this bestselling book has been meticulously revised and updated to thoroughly cover the latest features and capabilities of MySQL 5.0, as well as to add new coverage of features introduced with MySQL 5.1. "One of the best technical books I have read on any subject."--Gregory Haley, C Vu, The Association of C & C++ Users "A top-notch user's guide and reference manual, and in my opinion, the only book you'll need for the daily operation and maintenance of MySQL databases.

Sehr gute Referenz zum mal Nachschlagen oder zum Themen wieder auffrischen! Für Anfänger nicht empfehlenswert, aber ab fortgeschrittenen MySQL-Kenntnissen ist das Buch sehr gut.

4.0 von 5 Sternen This is a reference book, by the same person who writes the online documentation. 6. Januar 2011
Von Gregory A. Gum - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

While this book is a comprehensive, I found it to be more of a reference book than otherwise. It covers pretty much the same material as what is found in the online docs. Which isn't surprising as the book author is an employee of MySQL and writes the online documentation. The book is valuable as a reference, but it weighs in at 1200 pages which is more than I am going to sit down and read as a narrative.

The first chapter is a tutorial, but after that, it's all reference material. If that is what you are looking for, great. But if your looking for beginner/intermediate material, this is not it. The book does not cover MYSQL Workbench at all which is what the newcomer to MySQL normally uses to get started. Nobody wants to learn MySQL just from a command prompt, but this is the approach the book takes.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good reference but not too ideal for a learner 5. Februar 2013

This book is very thorough, seriously detailed on MySQL. The author did a good job on explaining everything in details. However, if you are someone like me who is trying to get into MySQL, this book might not be ideal, because this book focuses too much on details like explaining every single data type and their attributes and so on. It makes the learning process very dry.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Good introduction, perfect reference 11. März 2009
Von Trevor Burnham - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

If you're looking for a book on MySQL, this is clearly the one. It's up-to-date for MySQL 5 (MySQL 6 is not yet ready for wide release), it effectively explains generic SQL concepts like inner/outer joins, and, of course, it's a comprehensive guide to the peculiarities of MySQL. Even if you're using MySQL through an abstraction layer, such as Hibernate, you'll still find the information on configuration useful.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Essential for MySQL work 12. Oktober 2008
Von Paul Whipp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is an excellent text that should be used as an example by other text book authors. Its detail is moderated by its excellent index and contents which has resulted in my using it almost every day since I bought it.

Why not five stars? I could use a little more detail on underlying reasons and how-tos and a little better highlighting in the text to bring out examples etc.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Complete * and well organized for easy access. 13. Februar 2013

This is my second edition purchased and I am well satisfied * except for the absence of any treatment of dealing with non-english alphabets such as french. Disappointing in a growing reach of MySql and a need of long time developers to handle international information...
