Collins was heavily involved in the Pre-911 Jihadist movement when Jihad was considered an honourable venture and was not associated with the atrocities of post-911. He describes a life constantly in movement between the US and various warzones. He really made his name in Chechnya during the 90's as a young man. Undoubtedly the experience was harrowing. He saw many atrocities and took part in brutal reprisals. The description of knifing a sentry outpost, and witnessing Russian soldiers who had raped, tortured and mutilated a Chechen girl being decapitated is not for the faint hearted, but these things happened and he makes sure the reader understands the context. Clearly he left a part of his soul in Chechnya, losing a leg and a wife and child there. I imagine that Chechnya very much haunts him to this day. The Jihadists as they were pre 911 are a collection of Hanky-panky Jihadists, obese Saudis and young guys with fervour but dubious religious convictions and seemingly time and money on their hands to travel the globe almost but not usually taking real roles in global Jihad. Collins finds these people infuriating, and with the zeal of a prison conversion, and the tragedy of a wretched childhood, seeks to take on the world. He ends up falling out with the Mujahideen movements in Azerbaijan supporting the Chechens due to unclear acts of treachery, and then approaches the CIA and begins to work for them informing on the bad members of the Islamic community.
He is a contradictory character. Now a bountyhunter and with a myspace profile you can't tell what he really stands for to be honest. It is clear he is passionate about injustice which Jihad allows him a legitimate expression for challenging, and his own own blog words ' has gun, will travel'.
He is a good example of a modern Islamic convert with very different cultural attitudes and values to the Muslims he has rubbed shoulders with and shows the gulf in understanding that will become more significant in the future as more Westerners embrace Islam and find their values clashing with their co-religionists, who as he makes abundantly clear are know-alls, disorganised and without a clear vision for dealing with injustice, which is why Jihad today has such a bad connotation with mass murder and unjust killing.
The book is well written, although quite a lot of it is tedious, but that clearly is the nature of that life, endless journeys, hold-ups and double crosses. The Arabs are as ineffectual with Jihad as the CIA are with counter intelligence. He concludes the War on Terror is a complete nonsense, and the political will to actually do things is constantly stopped by the 'professional bed-wetters' in the White House. He should know. Its a long book, but for people who wish to see how inept the FBI and CIA really are on the ground, this book makes thoughtful reading.

Why we failed to penetrate Al Qaeda
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 31. Oktober 2004Verifizierter Kauf
Anyone who wants to understand the U.S. intelligence failures in the War Against Terrorism needs to read this book. The author, an American jihadi who could pass without question among the most extreme elements of the Islamist movement, was frustrated at every turn by his efforts to act as an undercover agent for the U.S. among the Islamists. So extreme were the self-imposed limitations on the use of counter-intelligence agents by the FBI and CIA that the author had to vow not to be engaged in military activities when acting as a CIA spy in Chechenya, even though he would be going there as a purported guerilla fighter. Then the CIA insisted that it would have to inform both the Russian and Azerbaijan governments that the author would be entering Chechenya through Azerbaijan due to an agency rule requiring the "host" government be informed any time a U.S. agent entered its territory. This despite the author's first hand experience that both the Russian and Azerbaijan governments were thoroughly penetrated by the Islamists and their organized crime colloborators. Finally the author's opportunity to meet directly with Bin Laden himself is vetoed by his CIA/FBI handlers. If these are reflective of policies imposed by the Clinton Administration then clearly Clinton merits the charge that he sabotaged U.S. intelligence gathering activities in the 90s. However, it is by no means clear where the policies in question came from nor whether the current administration has jettisoned them. Indeed, what make Collins's account so plausible is that he himself makes no efforts to relate his experience to the American blame game and instead is simply intent on telling his own story.
I note that certain reviewers are rating this book according to whether they admire the author or not. This is not, in my view, an appropriate use of the review process. The author is the product of a severely disfunctional family and was well on his way to becoming a professional criminal when he found a religion which provided a means for sanctifying his already well-established proclivities towards violence. His performance in the jihad in many way illustrates all that is repugnant about U.S. foreign policy - strident self-righteousness, profound ignorance about foreign cultures, unwillingness to cooperate with others, open racism, and easy betrayal of friends. None of this changes the fact that this book offers a virtually unprecedented direct look into the life of a genuine jihadi, as well as a compelling illustration of why U.S. human intelligence has fallen into such a disasterous state.

Very informative.
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 19. August 2006Verifizierter Kauf
The book was very easy to read. You can probably read it in a day if you are a fast reader.
The book is about an American that converts to Islam in prison, and decides to go to fight for Islam. He has many misteps including going to the Kashmir region in India, going to Afghanistan, and to Kosovo. He does get to Chechnya twice, and fights the Russuans.
The book was both interesting and informantive. I work in the security field in the middle east, and I found the book to be fascinating. It answered a lot of questions I had about how the Mujahid operate, and also how they could be so effective against the soviets. But it left many more questions unanswered.
It was a really good portrayal of what happens on the other side of the wall, so to speak. I think the book would be a valuable teaching tool if used in conjunction with other first hand accounts, and other reports.
I hope people in our intelligence agencies are reading it and are looking at ways to correct the many glaring faults that the writer points out.
Also the book was exciting, it was a page turner. Reading it made for a pleasant time killer.
I wish that the book were longer and more detailed.

A brutal account of modern war in Chechnya with no apologies.
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 18. März 2006Verifizierter Kauf
This was an excellent book no matter how you look at it. I did not purchase the book because I was interested in analyzing and assessing Aukai's moral framework. And I am not going to give this book a poor rating because Aukai left his wife (wives) or butchered poor Russian conscripts in Chechnya. I bought the book to read about his experiences fighting in the armpits of the world.
Aukai writes with passion, writes with anger, and writes from the heart, regardless of his views or the context of his actions. In this light, My Jihad is a raw account of one man's twisted, horrible, violent journey through the jihadist underworld. I could not put the book down and appreciated the often unflattering frankness of the author.
Any person interested in learning how guerrilla organizations operate needs to read this book after leaving their moral reservations and ethical code of conduct at the door. This book is a valuable look inside how guerrilla organizations recruit, transport, infiltrate countries, train their men, and then conduct combat operations. Aukai's look inside international jihadist movements rings true for anyone with experience fighting Arab/Muslim extremist guerrilla organizations in the Middle East.
I recommend My Jihad for anyone who wants an uncensored, uncompromising window into the world of Islamic guerrilla warfare. Don't be surprised if you don't like what you see and if you don't like the messenger.
(Note: Aukai is currently serving time in a Mexican prison for a weapon violation during his subsequent bounty hunter job.)
