A brand new edition of the long unavailable children’s story, written and illustrated by the author of The Hobbit and Letters from Father Christmas, with newly scanned manuscript pages and redesigned text.
Professor J.R.R. Tolkien invented and illustrated the book of Mr Bliss’s adventures for his own children when they were very young. The story is reproduced here exactly as he created it – handwritten with lots of detailed and uproarious colour pictures.
This is a complete and highly imaginative tale of eccentricity. Mr Bliss, a man notable for his immensely tall hats and for the girabbit in his garden, takes the whimsical decision to buy a motor car. But his first drive to visit friends quickly becomes a catalogue of disasters. Some of these could be blamed on Mr Bliss’s style of driving, but even he could not anticipate being hijacked by three bears.
As for what happened next – the readers, whether young or old, will want to discover for themselves. Thankfully all ended well, and even the yellow motor car with red wheels (to which Mr Bliss has taken an understandable and great dislike), came in useful at the end…

Pressestimmen
‘Owes a little to Beatrix Potter in its ironical humour and to Edward Lear in the style of its drawings, though Tolkien’s approach is less grotesque and more delicate than Lear’s.’ Humphrey Carpenter
‘A celebration, in the spirit of The Wind in the Willows, of a vanished, vulgar England where everybody did – and spoke – exactly as he pleased, and life was consequently a series of amiable abrupt collisions, feebly refereed by the police in the shape of Sergeant Boffin. Although the book ought to feel dated, … dating has done little harm to Tom Kitten or Mr Badger, and there seems no reason why it should here.’ T.A. Shippey, TLS
Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State, but at the age of four he and his brother were taken back to England by their mother. After his father’s death the family moved to Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham. Tolkien spent a happy childhood in the countryside and his sensibility to the rural landscape can clearly be seen in his writing and his pictures.

So many of Tolkien's works are serious, in a literary sense (although they have humour within them) that it is easy to forget he also had a very humorous side. This is seen clearly in the likes of Farmer Giles of Ham, Roverandom, The Father Christmas Letters and Mr Bliss.
This edition is gorgeous - a pleasant-sized hardback with firm glossy pages. The story is reproduced twice. Reading forwards in portrait mode you read the typeface story with Tolkien's coloured illustrations inserted into the text. Reading backwards in landscape mode on the lower pages you read the Original handwritten version with the pictures at the bottom of each page and on the upper pages, the typeface transcription.
Like the other stories mentioned above. Mr Bliss evolved from a story Tolkien told to his children and so it has the charm of humour and hilarious escapades on every page to keep the reader engaged. Tolkien's illustrations are gorgeous and he is really under-rated as an artist and illustrator. Some of the paintings of the forest and the bear's home seem to remind one of the Hobbit (Mirkwood and Beorn's house). Interestingly, another painting features the policeman's son, Sam, near a bystander called Gaffer Gamgee!
The story itself is about the funny misadventures of Mr Bliss, a rather Mr Bean-like character for whom everything seems to go wrong. He buys a new car but is a disastrous driver perhaps echoing Tolkien himself who apparently was not great in the driving department. The story is about 70 pages long with about 50 -100 words on a page depending on illustrations. It would make a great bed-time story read over a few nights to children, but one can also easily read it in a single sitting with a bit more time allowed.
I think there is little doubt that if this had been published in 1936, along the lines of the Beatrix Potter volumes, as was considered, it would have become a favourite and led to Tolkien doing many more illustrated humorous stories. Perhaps that might have meant he would not have devoted as much time to Middle-earth. We can only wonder what might have been, but at least we now have Mr Bliss to enjoy.
Escrita em inglês de fácil compreensão, sem o inglês arcaico usual do Tolkien.
Ótimo para colecionadores do escritor, difícil de encontrar também.
The story is simple, funny, silly and has that Tolkien touch that makes you feel like a little child.
It has the edited version on one side and the original version on the other (with the original draws and Tolkien calligraphy)
