Kurzbeschreibung

For Mother’s Sake is the true-life account of a boy growing up on the Texas/Mexico border during the 1940s, of his discovery of sex, drink, rock ‘n’ roll and love in the 50s, and of California in the 1960s and a remarkable journey through a decade of radical social and political change. Along with Frank Zappa, he was a founder member of the Mothers of Invention, one of the most influential ‘rock’ bands in the history of 20th century music. Jimmy recalls these times with a clarity that is remarkable, considering the backdrop. Jimmy’s desires are laid bare as he discovers what free love, drugs and “freakiness” are all about. Cast back into obscurity by Frank Zappa, Jimmy goes on to recall time spent in the wilderness, brief returns to stardom and, on moving to Europe, a return to center stage with the Grandmothers. But not for long as the unexpected happens! Left stranded and alone in Europe, Jimmy forms new musical partnerships and stays on the road, a troubadour to the end. By this time, Jimmy has finally acquired mythical “ol’ timer” status, particularly in Europe, where he was much loved and where he had, along the way, finally met the love of his life. He considered himself a “fortunate guy”.
Jimmy left an incomplete manuscript when he died. From 1995, the existing text has been supplemented with reminiscences and statements drawn from Jimmy’s own website bio and from the many interviews he gave during this time. But this is his book and these are his words. Indeed, the book ends with extracts from his last written interview, given in Aug. of 2008, less than 3 months before he died. It is a poignant ending to a remarkable story.

Man erfährt sehr viel über Jimmy Carl Black aber auch über Zappa und die übrigen Musiker der "Mothers" aber auch über die aufregenden Zeiten der Roaring Sixties. RiP Jimmy!

HASH(0x99dfac54) von 5 Sternen Like talking to Jimmy Carl himself! 12. Januar 2014
Von pereubu - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Apparently recollected in the last years of his life, this is a wonderful collection of brief stories about his incredible life. Who else grows up in a small town in Texas, the son of a Native American from Oklahoma (raised by his step-dad), does rodeo, finds out about sex in Mexico, moves to LA, joins an R&B band (Soul Giants), has that band morph into the Mothers (of Invention), travel the world, get thrown out of several whore houses in Europe for having a pony tail, troves the aisles of Royal Albert Hall in a Jimi Hendrix outfit hustling some action (part of a Zappa performance piece), shoots whipped cream out of a stuffed girafe's ass at the Garrick theatre in NYC, gets fired from the Mothers with most of the other original members, joins a million bands, makes donuts at a winchell's near El Paso, falls asleep while the donut maker keeps working... You get the picture!

HASH(0x99e05048) von 5 Sternen A must for Jimmy fans, but also a good read for those who aren't 19. März 2014
Von Rebecca Smith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Knowing nothing about the Mothers of Invention and Jimmy Carl Black, I was pleasantly surprised when given this book as a gift. An interesting read, it provides an insight into not only his life but also the times he lived through. Well edited, it's an easy read that takes you from the beginning of JCB's life to the end through the events he considered most significant. I imagine for those who are interested in the Mothers, Frank Zappa and/or JCB this book would be an essential read because of the detailed information about how and when the music JCB made, came about. (Straight from the horses mouth as it were as you can really hear the voice of Jimmy Carl Black coming out at you from the pages.)

HASH(0x99e015f4) von 5 Sternen Can't help but love the true "LEG-END"!!!! 13. August 2014
Von Marty jones - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
JCB is more than just the Indian of the group,he is true "leg-end". Considering he was in MOI,Grandmothers,Jack and Jim show, named Little feat played with a ton of greats, spent the last year's of his life living in Germany and perhaps slept with the entire groupie scene of the 60's and 70's,,,twice, it is no wonder why this book had to be published. If you ever have met him or heard him talk before reading this you can hear that warm friendly grandpa like voice in the written words of his memoir. My brief time spent with him ranks high in my world, thanks to him I now know the equally great Eugene Chadbourne . The book might put off the die hard Zappa fanboys but he never really puts Frank down as a player or band leader just the cold hard facts of FZ actions. There is so much more to JCB than his Times with the Mothers. A true Legend in his own words. RIP JCB.

HASH(0x99e06234) von 5 Sternen Must-read for any MOI/rock fan! 6. Januar 2015
Von Rich M. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
A great memoir by a rock legend, the only bad thing about the book was the lack of attention the editors gave to the last part of the book - it was full of typos and somewhat hard to read. The rest of the book, however, was a very down-to-earth story that related Jimmy Carl Black's varied career in music, including his time with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, with Eugene Chadborne, and numerous other rock luminaries. Very detailed personal recollections written just the way most people remember JCB talking - simple, straight-forward, and full of fun.

This is an excellent autobiography of a great drummer and vocalist who should really be remembered to everyone, not just the select few who followed the MOI - not like the crap performers who pass for "rockers" today. Recommended reading!

HASH(0x99e01fc0) von 5 Sternen Great read! 15. Juli 2014
Von Paul S. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I'm only half-way through this book, and I've already had dreams about it. I was in 9th grade when Freak Out came out, and have been a Zappa fan ever since - JCB gives wonderful insight into the world of rock back then, with amazing meetings of who's who - everyone, it seems - of the music world of the time. I haven't even read about the Grandmothers yet, but I was lucky enough to be in Austin, Texas when they were living here, and they played at a bar out at the lake where I lived frequently. I went to see them every night they played, even got to hang out with them during a break and provided some herbs for everyone's enjoyment - truly a nice guy, great drummer - if you ever listened to and liked early Zappa, you MUST get this book!!
