This award-winning, uncompromising novel is a valuable read for older children struggling to understand life's unavoidable trials. Time Out

The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming... This monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Costa and Galaxy Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. This internationally best-selling novel is an extraordinarily moving tale of love, loss and hope, from a multi-award-winning writer.

HASH(0x9ae6dc00) von 5 Sternen Hype it down before reading it 23. Juli 2014

Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is the perfect example of how too much hype can ruin a nice book. I read it with really, really high expectations and it ended up not fulfilling them. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book as much as I could. It's an easy, fast-paced reading and a sad story.

I never knew children fantasy fiction could be weaved quite like this. This book had me intrigued, excited, curious and immensely sad. I wish I had gotten the illustrated version, since I have heard wonders about it.

The story stands on its own, though. Conor's life was turned upside down ever since his mother got ill and he deals with it the best way he can, in all aspects of his life.

This is the first book I have read by Patrick Ness and I thoroughly enjoyed his writing. It was clear and unpretentious and yet it made me feel so emotional at times.

Conor's character had a lot of depth. He is 13, dealing with a horrible situation that has several repercussions on his life. He is incredibly brave but he is also a young boy and I found him very believable. Most of the other characters were very well conceived as well, particularly his grandmother.

I am not giving it 5 stars because I was not quite swept by everything, (view spoiler).
Also, it was fairly predictable and I am sure I would have related much more if I were younger.

However, as a whole this was a pretty amazing, emotional book about love, loss, grief and guilt and I think everyone should read it at some point in life.

HASH(0x9ae72780) von 5 Sternen Great book 27. Mai 2014

The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 its because I felt it was too short, but that's just me! the book is great and has a very interesting concept behind it.

A very special kind of book in genre and in style, written in simple language like a children’s tale but with such a strong lesson it touches the heart.

The story is about Conor, a 13-year old boy and his mother who has cancer. One night a monster in the form of a yew tree shows itself to Conor and tells him he will tell 3 stories after which he has to answer the monster's question. The stories seem insignificant to him at first, but later prove to be valuable lessons about life. Among other things the yew tree helps Conor learn that things aren't always as they seem and right and wrong are not so easily defined. Beautiful story.
HASH(0x9ae75bb8) von 5 Sternen and I read somewhere that a great film is on its way 5. Juni 2015

Patrick Ness took up the challenge of writing his own story following the leads of Siobhan Dowd's inspirational ideas. In his own way, he honored the commitment. It won recognition, sincere praise, respect from the critics, from Siobhan's fan club of avid readers, and I read somewhere that a great film is on its way. So, Patrick found his voice giving children a chance to tell their end of the tale. The story is both terrifying and beautiful. It takes you on a powerful journey of life, death, and healing.
