I doubt Mr Teasdale will ever write something that wins the Noble prize for literature, but that doesn't mean his novels don't have a certain appeal (along with certain problems). Usually, I like the creativity and the sort of "I do what I want, what do I care what others think about it..." attitude the author has works well enough so I can ignore the way his female characters inevitable seem to be modeled after porn starlets.

This time though the novel felt too uninspired.
- Orphaned girl with prodigious talent for magic going to magic school, check
- Evil necromancer doing random evil stuff because it's evil, check (mwhahah)
- Powerful, mysterious patrons taking interest in heroine for mysterious reasons, check
- Snobby bully bullying heroine, only for them to learn their mistake, check
...
And so on. Seen it all before, except maybe for the lesbian roommate thing. However, even there I found myself fairly disappointed: the main reason they are in a relationship (which basically means they're having sex) is that they're roommates; there's no development of a romance between them, they don't go on any dates, never talk about any personal business etc. Instead, the roommate gets drunk and has sex with the heroine, _despite_ the heroine growing up in a nun-run orphanage, and not having any previous experiences, this obviously works out perfectly for everyone involved. Sigh. Shallow.

Shallow is also the word I'd use to describe the world-building; especially around the dragons. Despite the heroine and her clique (the misfits...) all being various types of dragons, it doesn't get much more complicated than "those are gray dragons, they are called gray dragons, they are kinda gray in color, and they are good at physical stuff".

At long last a worthy successor to the Thaumatology series. Yes heroine is a little bit like the main char in the Thaumatology series but for me it is a win. If like the Thaumatology or the Anneka series from Niall Teasdale then rhis book is right for you. Strong female characters, a new magical world, worthy enemies and of course the all female romances.

This Book is basically an MLP AU where everyone is Dragons instead of Ponies. Apart from that it's just Twilight Sparkle and the Gang at Canterlot University of Magic. They're all there except for Pinkie Pie.
This is basically just MLP Fanfiction, and it is absolutely glorious to read. My new favourite out of all of Mr. Teasedale's books.
And yes, i am an unapologetic Twilight Sparkle fanboy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Full of awesome and misfits 10. Juni 2017

Another excellent Niall Teasdale book.

1. Excellent world building
2. Good/great dialogue.
3. Intrigue! Daring do! Boobies! (more of the boobies than the other two really).

Fun fast paced read that draws one in with some good twists and turns.

The "Dragons" of this book are well.. everyone. Highly enjoyed some of the takes on the "school of magic" trope as well. Also well done was the season change. Winter being the longer days instead of our world.

A lot of good stuff and fast development of many parts of the book. Did not leave me at all bored and I ran this book through pretty quickly.

Reminds me of the "Bookworm" series by Christopher G. Nuttall in some ways but with a better sense of humor and fun than those books. And considerably more adult than those as well.

It'll be neat to see how this series fleshes out. Teasdale does have so many series rolling now that I do wonder when he'll get back to this one.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Good if you like poking fun at Bronys... 29. Juni 2017

I have friend that is a big-time Brony, who is always trying to make me watch it – so telling her about the new book series, which was “just like it - only better,” was worth the purchase (especially when I told her ‘how’ it was better).

However, the attention to detail in the writing is very good. Like, using full names all the time, and the way he highlighted the dark side of the setting was well done - highly stratified society, with abuse & sexism being common, and the consequences of barring ‘dark’ spirits from crossing into the ‘happy hunting grounds,’ was well done, in my opinion. I nice poke at the source material.

The magic system seems to be very much like the one in Thaumatology – with demons (or in this case, dark spirits that never crossed into the afterlife) providing extra magic power in exchange for power over you.

Truthfully, the story is a bit basic, and the character is Mr. Teasdale’s typical ‘enormously’ gifted, talented, hot, lesbian (but bi-inclined), orphan. The sexscapades were a bit over used, but thankfully there is actually not a lot of detail, it’s just mentioned a lot. So, not too bad.

So, basically I think this is a good start to a series – as long as you are ok with poking fun of the Ponies, and Bronys.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome story 6. Mai 2017

As always the author didn't disappoint. Some of the key points of the story were predictable, but you can gloss over it and appreciate the magic system and world building. The characters are endearing, smart and funny! A page turner who deserve the money I spent on it.

Niall Teasdale is still performing magic with their writing. I continue to be impressed by the path of the stories. When I read, I seek stories that are full of life and complexity. Niall rarely fails to provide in any way shape or form. I will continue to grab as many stories as I can for as long as they keep coming.
