Kurzbeschreibung

Golf fans will not forget the 39th Ryder Cup in a hurry. Staged at the Medinah Country Club just outside of Chicago, the 2012 event has already gone down as the most remarkable competition in its 85-year history. The American team had home advantage, and a golf course unapologetically set up to suit its own players. Supported by tens of thousands of loud and proud fans, the USA's star-studded line-up dominated the first two days and ended the Saturday with a seemingly unassailable 10-6 advantage. No away team had ever won the Ryder Cup from such an unpromising position. Sunday was singles day, traditionally the forte of American teams. The situation looked bleak, especially when European team member and number 1 golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, very nearly missed his tee-off time. Yet slowly but surely, the European team - who had top-loaded their line-up in one last throw of the dice - started to turn the scoreboard blue. With inspirational captain Jose Maria Olazabal stiring European blood with thoughts of the late Ryder Cup magician Seve Ballesteros (whose silhouette was emblazoned on the players' sweaters and bags), the tide turned and the previously dominant American players started to crumble in the face of the onslaught. Suddenly European players were holing miraculous putts to win holes out of the blue. Something very special was happening. When German Martin Kaymer sank his putt on the eighteenth green to clinch the point that retained the Ryder Cup, the most astonishing comeback in the event's long and distinuished history was complete. Miracle at Medinah is the compelling narrative of those amazing three days in Illinois, a fitting chronicle of an unbelievable sporting story.

I enjoyed the book and the insight it gave to the build-up to and the three days in Medinah. A must for golf buffs. It was disappointing, though, the dismissal of Molinari's performance, who didn't need a Captain's pick to play the Ryder Cup (twice) and was only mentioned for Woods conceding the hole on 18th; leaving aside the 'fours', it completely failed to mention the fact that being dormie down with Tiger and getting to three feet may not be the easiest task with the tremendous pressure that was so very well described for several other team members; no reference to his performance in the first 17 holes when the match became critical to the eventual outcome of the Cup and he managed to prevent Tiger from catching fire and energizing his team: Stricker may have not chocked on 17 with Tiger in command. I really hope he will get some recognition at Gleneagles when three Italians will make the squad...

I was sceptical about reliving the dream so soon after the event but within a few pages it felt like I was back on my sofa back in September. The book is well written and moves along at the pace of the actual event.
At times the book takes you behind the scenes and on occasion I forgot that I knew the ending. Would Martin Kaymer hold the putt reminded me of watching Von Ryans Express wondering if Frank Sinatra would get on the train. Fortunately the Miracle of Medinah has a happier ending.
A thoroughly good read that leaves you with a smile on your face (if you are European!!!).
HASH(0x9e681ad4) von 5 Sternen Ryder Cup - one of the greatest Ryder Cups, ever. 13. Februar 2014
Von Marcia L. Ferguson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I expected more behind-the-scenes information in this book - it seemed dry and lifeless, considering it was passionate golf and hotly contested, as always. The social events weren't covered at all - and that rare interaction and long-planned 'occasions' are much of the event. I also wish there'd been more about the players ... but I did appreciate the focus on Ian Poulter ... that's what I'd like to have seen, especially in regards to the victorious European team.
