In a nutshell, players control a faction and attempt to dominate a newly discovered galaxy by building up their industrial, political, and military strength. Over the course of each round, players will build factories, embassies, and outposts throughout their territory, as well as explore new areas, placing tiles on the board. Players move their pieces from really well-designed player boards (with indentations so that pieces are not sliding around or easily knocked over- take that "Eclipse"), and place them in the appropriate spaces on the hexes. Technology cards also factor in and are also used in combat for their various numbers. Combat is a bit determinative, as players make attacks with their industrial, political, or military power. By added up the appropriate power with range, each side them plays their tech cards for the numbers. The side with the most power wins. There is quite a bit more going on in this game than stated above, like optional faction houses which can bring certain abilities to the game, and agents and fleets which boost your power and are mobile.
There are two things you absolutely must know about "Hegemonic" before you buy it, however. First of all, for all of the space artwork and pieces, the game is not terribly thematic. Indeed, the game often feels like a pretty in-depth abstract game. That is not necessarily a bad thing, which leads me to my second point: "Hegemonic" is a lot of fun. Because it does feel so abstract, I don't know if it is for everybody. Certainly those looking for a grand space adventure in the "Twilight Imperium" mode will not be impressed, but taken for what it is "Hegemonic" offers its own unique adventures. I'd recommend that you take this one out for a spin before you buy to see if it's right for you.
