Born in 1906 and executed by the regime of Gamal Abd al-Nasser in 1966, Sayyid Qutb remains one of the most influential articulators of both revolutionary Islamist political doctrine and the modern Salafi Reformist theology that underpins it. His work represents some of the most elaborate and sophisticated expressions of core Salafist Reformist themes. These include Islamic renewal and authenticity, the purification from religion of various accretions (extreme Sufism, excessive legal formalism, cultural practices), a direct encounter with the texts of the revelatory period, the rationalization of Islamic legal and political thought for application in the modern context, and the relevance of Islam for action and material life. His articulation of modern Islamist political doctrine has been profoundly influential across the entire spectrum of Islamic revivalist thought among both pragmatists and revolutionaries alike.

Terrorists Manual?

This "Evil" little book inspired Bin Laden and other "Jihadists".
Its a guide to fighting the west using the Quran as a guide, reason and excuse.It makes no sense and is hard to read, sometimes tripping over itself.
Its a must read if you want to know how these "sick" minds think.

Sayed Qutb writes in a truly resolute fashion - there is nothing but 'jahiliyyah' (ignorance) outside of Islam and therefore all other societies, for whatever their high merits to which he awards them at the beginning of the book, must be brought into the 'truth' of Islam so that they may know true guidance - or so he makes clear in his writing. The book is a short read but a crucial insight into the fundamentalist Muhammadan mind - for it frames jihad in the spirit of a revolutionary character and not just for the establishing of Sharia and Islamic dominance. This character prevails today, where Islamic fundamentalists seek to overthrow the social and political order that ostensibly encumbers them, to replace that order with a pure Islamic caliphate where the only constitution is that of Allah and the practice of his messenger Muhammad. Qutb identifies with this strongly throughout the book, and makes clear the motivations for such a position. It is channelling the prophet Muhammad himself with his overthrowing and domination of the social and political order of Yathrib post Hijrah. With what would be called al qaeda (the base) established in Yathrib by Muhammad and his companions, Qutb saw the spread of Islam by jihad and dawah in these early years as the means to which liberation would be spread to humanity, and evokes a chillingly powerful call for believers to strive forth in establishing such a community of believers again before, as it can be rightly assumed, making jihad their calling as Muhammad and the Rashidun did in the earliest years of Islam.

Because of Qutb's overwhelming importance in the Muslim world, "Milestones" by Seyyid Qutb is essential reading for anyone interested in the question of Islam and jihad. Qutb was perhaps the most widely read and most influential Islamic scholar, writer, philosopher of the 20th Century. His exposition of jihad in Islam lies at the base of the entire Muslim Brotherhood which is the largest and most influential Muslim organization in the world today. It has spawned many other organizations, some terrorist such as Hamas, and others not overtly terrorist, like nearly all the American Muslim advocacy organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America (this is Obama's favorite), and the Muslim Student Association which is promoting open anti-Semitism on university campuses all over America.

The motto of the Muslim Brotherhood is:

"God is our purpose, the Prophet our leader, the Qur'an our constitution, Jihad our way and dying for God's cause our supreme objective."

Documents of the Muslim Brotherhood which were captured by our FBI include this: The Muslim Brotherhood "must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Allah's religion is made victorious over all other religions." -- Mohamed Akram, "An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America," May 22, 1991, Government Exhibit 003-0085, U.S. vs. HLF, et al. P. 7 (21).

In "Milestones", Qutb describes the four stages of jihad in Islam:
1) When Muhammad was just starting our in Mecca, he was weak, with few followers. Therefore, Muslims were prohibited from engaging in violence, even in self-defense. It is from this period that we get the benign live-and-let-live verses from the Koran.
2) After moving to Medina, Muhammad acquired some political power. At this stage, Muslims were permitted, but not required, to defend themselves with violence, and the new verses from the Koran confirm this.
3) Muhammad continued to solidify and increase his power in Medina, but his power was not yet absolute. At this stage, violent jihad in self-defense was required, not only permitted.
4) Finally, after Muhammad acquired absolute power, the new verses in the Koran, which abrogated the older, more peaceful verses, required what is called the "offensive jihad", that is, offensive war against non-Muslims in order to spread Islam to the world. Here we get verses in the Koran like this:
-- Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme. (8:40)
-- Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme. (2:193)
In order to understand the violent, imperialist nature of the ideology of Islam, Qutb's "Milestones" is essential reading.
