If you thought The Notebook was a tearjerker, get out the hankies, pull up a chair, and get ready to have your heart monkey-wrenched by Nicholas Sparks' second star- crossed love story, Message in a Bottle. When Theresa Osborne takes a much-needed summer holiday at Cape Cod, she finds a lot more than a break from the hustle and bustle. On an early-morning jog along Cape Cod Bay, she comes across a corked bottle with a scrolled-up message inside that reads: "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you, my darling, as I always do, but today is especially hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together..." It bobbles around in the same vein for several more paragraphs and ends with "...am alone on the pier and I do not care what others think as I bow my head and cry and cry and cry. Garret."

Garret may eat quiche, but no bother--before you can say "Look! I found two more letters!" Theresa is hot on his trail and determined to find this mysterious yet sensitive message-in-a-bottle man. She finds him at a sleepy North Carolina port, working on his beloved sailboat, The Happenstance. From there, a romance buds and blossoms into a colourful bouquet of emotional baggage. Theresa has problems with her past--or, more accurately, her past is a problem. She is so scarred from her "I'm a super churchgoing guy now that I've run out on my wife" ex-husband that she hasn't tried to date since her divorce some three or four years before. And who is Catherine? And what's Garret's bag, anyway? When Theresa finds out, she plunges to the depths of her soul and uncorks a whopper of a secret about herself, bringing Garret to terms with who he really is.

Message in a Bottle has the earmarks of sentimental tongue-wagging at its finest and should please romantics and cynics alike--it's sure to bring romantics to their knees, while cynics will be slapping theirs in laughter.

Format: Taschenbuch
Message in a Bottle lacks the emotional power that Sparks enerated in his excellent novel, The Notebook. Meager character development, the lack of crisis and tedium makes this 288 pages book like going sailing without wind - listless and boring. The exchange between the key characters is often insipid ("you were kinda quite tonight" she said. "I guess I didn't have much to say." He said. She took his hand, "I am glad you were with me." "Yea" he said.") and the trite dialogue between these two lovers often make you wince.
The melodrama begins with a mid-aged, lonely, single mother (Theresa) kicking at the waves along the shores of Cape Cod. When, lo and behold, she finds a corked bottle that floats into her life. A bottle that contains a lamenting (and quite pathetic) love letter. He whines and pines over his lost true love, his soul-mate and lost wife -"Catherine". As a budding co-dependent she avidly reads each wailing word, and is deeply touch by Mr. Bottleman. Any man that you would force to read Mr. Bottleman's poetic letter would quickly suspect that it was wrote after the said writer drank the contents of the bottle he was about to use - Cutty Shark. So what is an accomplished, educated and cosmopolitan co-dependant woman to do (the right answer is to throw the bottle and message back into the sea without the cork)? Why, she finds out where Mr. Bottleman lives (Wilmington, NC) and begins her journey of finding this man, a man with emotional depth, the man who can offer her finally, for once, dear God just once, the same kind of love she has to give (folks you are going to need a few bottles yourself to get to the end of this book). Does she find him. Yes!
Does she find the deep, self-sacrificing love that only Mr. Bottleman can offer? Of course not - he goes stupid on us and sails into the gail of the decade. Not Recommended.

This book does not even deserve the one star I'm giving it. It was so drawn out, long winded and predictable that I nearly went into a coma!

This is a book that almost any one can relate to even if you haven't been through what Theresa and Garrett have. It is written so that you can see the story through both of them and know what they're feeling. The last two chapters were thrilling, hard to put down, and had my stomach in knots until I found out what happened. Then I was in tears, and a little disappointed. But it was refreshing to read a book with a not-so-happy ending. It made the story more realistic. I loved it.

Oh my I am so happy with this book it really left its mark in my soul. It made me cry for atleast 3 chapters. I am serious. You have to read this book, well only if you are the romantic type and like to have books make you cry. If you do and you are like me then you will read this book and all Nicholas' other books too. But this one will really leave its mark in your mind and soul. After you read this book then go see the movie they will both please you.

Ich kenne das Buch in Deutsch und habe den Film gesehen, deshalb wollte ich meine Englischkenntnisse mit dem Roman überprüfen lassen. Es ist ein Genus wieder diese Geschichte in der Originalsprache zu lesen.

This book was just so awful. I wasted both time and money on it. I first read The Notebook and hated that. I thought I would give Sparks a chance to redeem himself with Message in a Bottle. (I can't understand how it is a NY Times Bestseller. I also can't fathom other readers' reviews of Message in a Bottle in which they say they loved The Notebook and were disappointed in Message.) They were both such drivel. Its frightening and sad that so many people would love these books. Obviously they don't know good writing..... Sparks certainly isn't familiar with it either. There was not one single creative thread to the story. It was laughable! It was a joke how either Garrett or Theresa was always getting "tight in the stomach" every few pages or so. Rather than convey the "feeling" with different words, Sparks chose to use the same trite phrase over and over and over again. Quite simply, I haven't anything good to say about it. It was overly simplistic and shallow. If Sparks can write a bestseller, I shouldn't have any problem writing my own. The publishers ought to be ashamed, but I guess they are too busy laughing all the way to the bank, as is Sparks. I just re-read To Kill a Mockingbird...... now that's a wonderful book!

I am a sucker for romantic love stories and always have tissues near me when I read a book or go to the movies. It is so nice to find a "soft" mystery with a peaceful ending to balance all the things we juggle daily. MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE brings back all those wonderful childhood memories of walking along the beach hoping to find the perfect sea shell, or a message in a bottle thrown overboard by some sailor many years ago. This story is a little different. Theresa actually uses modern electronics to speed up her search, but then gets bogged down by all the human "stalls" that get in our way. She procrastinates in making her decision to find Garrett. She does not believe that she can find him or that true love is possible. She thinks of herself as "the ugly duckling" compared to Catherine. She suffers from misconceptions about what each of them want. But eventually, she is able to overcome these "stalls" to find herself as well as the real Garrett. In many ways, reading MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE is a message to all of us to get rid of our old baggage and go after what we want. For fun, escape and a good love story, I recommend you read MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE. To fulfill your dreams, I also recommend you read THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTION to identify the "stalls" that hold you back from getting what you want in personal or business life, and follow the steps to success, achievement and greater happiness.
