SDS+ 17 piece Set
Cases are almost identical - Same aluminium coated board material, same edge and corner construction pieces and hinges, only difference is the choice of handle shape. I prefer the Metabo square handle but really they are basically the same quality.
Foam lid liner is soft open cell foam in the Makita case - Metabo has firmer closed cell foam
Makita uses tool positioning foam strips glued to a thin foam liner layer to the case base. Some of these were detached in my sample and were slightly annoying - They needed to be re-glued to be useful again.
METABO uses a very nice dimpled medium soft, closed cell foam liner with laser cut shapes for each chisel tool or bit. Very good design.
Choice of Bits included - See Comparison Chart Image (XLS)
All the same EXCEPT
MAKITA has - 5.5 x 110 and 7 x 160 (NO 12mm bits)
METABO has - 12 x 160 and 12 x 260 (NO 5.5 or 7mm bits)
My personal choice is that while I have 7mm bits in other sets and have never needed a 5.5mm bit rather than a 5 or 6mm bit that I already have in other sets, I do have a use for a longer choice of 12mm bits that are not already in my kit.
Machining and finish...
Both the MAKITA and METABO sets are identical in terms of CNC programs used to make them - as far as I can tell.
Both have the same looking tips brazed into them.
They seem to be the same hardness, but I have no way of testing them properly.
The MAKITA set does have an HM-CT (Hard Metal Carbide Tip) symbol on the outer label, but this may not mean the tips are actually any different to the METABO tips that have no such symbol on the label but appear the same.
Both sets have Make and bit size stamped on the shank.
The METABO bits are sandblasted as a final finish - I have no idea if this makes any difference in use, but I suspect not !
The outer cardboard case of the MAKITA kit is very thin cardboard - The METABO outer cardboard presentation box is much better quality cardboard and would protet the carry case better if used, but they will probably be discarded or stored and not be of any actual day to day use to the owner.
When I purchased these bit sets to compare and decide which to buy they were both available in the £25-£30 range with the METABO being slightly cheaper. Prices seem to vary quite wildly on Amazon and the official price elsewhere seems to be in the £60+ area !!!
There are quite a few other 17/15 piece sets on Amazon - Some are branded (e.g. DeWalt) while others are unknown Chinese names, but all have the same case and general choice of bits, though some have Cross-Tip inserts which are supposed to be better (?) - All are more expensive.
My guess is they are all made in the same place in China and have similar specifications with only small differences in choice of bits included and case/liner parts.
There is another set of 17 bits that is presented in a folded metal storage case under a number of Chinese "brand" names that may or may not have the same bits, and/or may be from another Chinese manufacturer ?
I haven't tried any of them out.
Overall my final decision was to keep the METABO set as it was (at the time of purchase) the cheaper set, and had a better storage case (the tool insert foam).
If the MAKITA set had been the cheaper one I probably would have kept that set !

PRO
