HASH(0x96ad8c78) von 5 Sternen This book almost shattered my orbital socket 11. Juni 2013
Von Skid - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I was reading this in the bathroom and I got so engrossed in it that I completely lost track of time. Before I knew it over an hour had passed, and when I tried to stand up I had been sitting there so long that both my legs had fallen asleep. I stumbled and fell, coming perilously close to smashing my face on the edge of the sink.

So yeah, it's good. And Fingerman narrowly escaped a massive lawsuit.

HASH(0x96adf6d8) von 5 Sternen Great book, beautifully done. 25. April 2013

This book has it all. I'm not normally a fan of the typical graphic novel, but this was a fun fantastic read. It was like an indie film in a book. Great characters, engaging storyline, and beautifully drawn. Plus are additional drawings and stories in the back of the book, which make it even more interesting.

HASH(0x96adf618) von 5 Sternen Terrific Graphic Novel 9. Mai 2013
Von Robert T Canipe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I enjoy graphic novels as much as I do text novels. When done right, a graphic novel can be as enjoyable and resonant as those rendered in text. Fingerman's MINIMUM WAGE resonates with real life characters and episodes.

HASH(0x96adb1d4) von 5 Sternen A Hardcover Worth Its Weight In Comics Gold 30. Mai 2014
Von purerockfury - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Browsing my local comic book shop a few months back, I noticed the first issue of the current iteration of "Minimum Wage". Flipping through, I was instantly reminded of "American Splendor" and being a huge fan of the late Harvey Pekar, I decided to give it a chance. It took that one issue to realize that I had unearthed comics gold here. While I enjoy a good sci-fi or superhero yarn as anyone, sometimes one needs to meet characters that they know on a personal level. As all previous comparisons resonate, "Maximum Minimum Wage" does a fantastic job of introducing you to those that you already know.

"Maximum Minimum Wage" is grounded, realistic and as bitter as any day-to-day existence that permeates the landscape of humanity. With each success comes another setback, each enjoyable moment met with one of worry and each situation relatable. One chapter can involve the inner workings of having Christmas dinner at the family households of a significant other. It sounds as dry as possible told in this manner, but the details are what make this otherwise droll set up blossom into storytelling gold.

With each character introduced, they have the distinction of bearing similarly physical space as anyone while possessing personality traits that make them all unique and memorable. None of them have a particularly special ability or talent. No one is solving a grand mystery or the active centerpiece of catastrophe. Where these people stand out as that as you come to know them, you see yourself and those around you in them. The characters in the story are people you know and as a result, they leap into your consciousness.

The cadre of black-and-white artwork compliments this book masterfully. It serves as a visual cue to how average the lives of these characters truly is and reminds us that we are hardly alone. In the moments when we feel like no one understands what we struggle with each day, Bob Fingerman's universe is here to show you exactly how unexciting life is for most people at a glance. Rather, it is the inner workings of these and our own lives that give everything real color and vibrancy.

Yes, I could feel all of this simply from the 100+ pages of a near 400 page hardcover compendium. Much like "American Splendor", "Maximum Minimum Wage" invites you to come along, walk for a while and just find yourself amongst friends. No one has anything going on that requires braggadocio. No one has a perfect life full of highs. Everyone has their flaws, their insecurities and makes their fair share of missteps. "Maximum Minimum Wage" feels like a new group of friends that you have yet to meet.

HASH(0x96ae4a50) von 5 Sternen Suckered for a fourth time 7. Mai 2013
Von R. Snare - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I bought the comics when they were first printed. I bought the first (partial) collection. I bought the second (then definitive) graphic novel. And now I've bought this version. That's four times now that Bob's suckered me into purchasing essentially the same material.

Of sure, it's been extensively re-worked each time (with beautiful grey tones enhancing the original black and white art). And this time it's being printed in what's probably close to the size of the original art (not that I didn't really enjoy the smaller size and more traditional book-feel of the previous collection "Beg the Question"). And this one includes all of the sort of completist minutiae that's crack to an obsessive collector like me. Still, it's not like there aren't plenty of other, newer, graphic novels demanding my attention.

But this is good stuff. The art, story, and characters really get under your skin, and inside your head. You care about these people (as reprehensible as they may be at times). You want to know more, and enjoy spending time with them. And, I can't overestimate this, Fingerman's art is really, really good here, possibly the best of his career.

I'd love to see him do further adventures of Rob, Sylvie, and their circle of friends. I'd like to know where they are now, if they're happy, sad, or (don't do it Bob!) even divorced and sharing custody of their kids.

I highly, highly recommend you pick this up and give it a read, even if you've read it before. And if you haven't, boy are you in for a treat!
