A not-so-merry widow…

The widowed Marchioness of Folkestone is notorious for her parties, her art collection, and her utter disregard for the rules. But Ellie Claiborne knows her destruction is near. The new marquess is her first lover – the man whose sculpted body and sardonic grin haunt her every time she picks up her paintbrush. If he ever returns to claim his inheritance, her heart won’t survive seeing him again.

A man determined to destroy her...

Nicholas Claiborne hasn’t stepped foot in England since watching Ellie marry his cousin. He has no use for the gorgeous, heartless girl who betrayed him, or the title she abandoned him for. But when his business in India turns deadly, Nick must return to London to uncover a murderer – and take revenge on the woman he couldn’t force himself to forget.

A love they can’t escape…

Nick hates Ellie’s transformation from sweet debutante to jaded seductress. Ellie despises him for leaving her behind. Still, the sparks between them reignite the passion that should have been their destiny. As their demands of each other turn darker and a potential killer closes in, they must decide whether to guard the fragile remnants of their hearts — or find a way to fall in love all over again.

Über den Autor

Sara Ramsey writes fun, feisty Regency historical romances. She won the prestigious 2009 Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® award with her second book, Scotsmen Prefer Blondes. Her first book, Heiress Without a Cause, was a 2011 Golden Heart finalist. Sara grew up in a small town in Iowa, and her obsession with fashion, shoes, and all things British is clearly a rebellion against her hopelessly uncool youth. She graduated from Stanford University in 2003 with a degree in Symbolic Systems (also known as cognitive science) and a minor in history. She is currently living the hip romance writer life in San Francisco, California.

Nicolas returns to England after several attempts on his life in India and means to find the mastermind and to also get revenge on his ex-fiancée and his cousin's merry widow, Ellie. The story is mostly about the relationship between Ellie and Nicolas, looking for the person who wants him dead is a small aside. There is some humorous exchanges between Ellie's brother Ferguson and Alex, the Earl of Salford.
Overall, not quite as entertaining as Heiress without a Cause, but I will not rule out a re-read.

HASH(0x9dcb0bc4) von 5 Sternen Didn't Feel the Love 2. Juli 2013
Von akb--bookworm - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
The third book of the Muses of Mayfair series leaves a lot to be desired. The series started out strong, but I feel like each one after it just gets worse and worse.

We've met Ellie Clairborne, sister of Ferguson from book 1, and know little about her. This is her book, but it was just a mess for me.

Nicolas Clairborne has finally returned to England after 10 years in India. For 10 long years, he has nursed his anger and hatred for Ellie for what she did to him. He's been plotting his revenge and setting the trap carefully for 10 long years...and it is completely lame. He's going to force her to become his mistress for 4 months and throw her aside--that will show her.

Maybe I am judging his "revenge" too harshly. But when I think of revenge, I think of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO who plots for YEARS and slowly and methodically sets his trap. Nick did an EXCELLENT job of weaving a tight noose around Ellie, but was totally lame when it came to knocking the chair out from under her. There could have been SO many better ways to "get revenge" and for them to still fall back in love. If he were the "villain" we would all be up in arms about him blackmailing her into his bed. Left bad taste in my mouth.

Nick and Ellie are both rather annoying. Ellie supposedly has this grand house party going on with lots of people, but we never see or hear about more than 5 of them. All of their time is spent bickering and having sex. Both Nick and Ellie are very contrary, and I found no enjoyment in their "development."

Second, the plot about someone trying to kill Nick was completely disjointed and of no use to the rest of the story. It was the catalyst that finally forced Nick home, yet was barely recognized. When the "villain" is revealed, everyone around them is saying "who?" And that isn't a good thing. Nobody knows who this guy is and why he's doing it and so who cares? What satisfaction is there in discovering some random joe-schmoe is the villain?

It took me about a week to plow through this book. It felt more like work than pleasure to read this story. This author doesn't seem to know how to blend her storylines into a cohesive story, as this is common in all the other books as well. Things don't flow.

Would I read this story again? No
Would I recommend this series? Yes
Would I read this author again? Yes, I want to read Alex's story.

I'm giving this 3 stars because I loved the other two books but at 22% I'm not going to finish this book. When I simply can't stand the hero, I'm done. I'm sure he'll end up being wonderful but that's not good enough for me. Even if revenge is what he's after there has to be something redeeming about him and there's not. He's a total jerk and everything that comes out of his mouth is mean and disgusting.

HASH(0x9dcb2120) von 5 Sternen Unconnected 24. Mai 2013

Format: Kindle Edition
I was a bit disappointed with this third book of the Muses of Mayfair series. Unfortunately, I was not able to connect with the characters. The story was about revenge but it was so fickle and lacked character and plot. The climax of the story was uneventful and could have used more suspense. Also Nick was not the slick type of hero and the other gentlemen were just not supporting at all and made Nick's character look almost goofy instead of heroic. I think the series could have benefited a little more if the author kept the bond between the Muses stronger much like the beginning instead of alienating them. I am sorry to say that I think Sara lost the plot on this one a bit. Additionally, the wording and writing the author used did not feel historical most of the time. A dramatic change from her first Muses book.

HASH(0x9dcb0c78) von 5 Sternen A complex historical about revenge and love 4. September 2013
Von Margaret Fisk - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Originally published on Tales to Tide You Over

I enjoy historical romance. It's been a favorite genre of mine for a very long while. This book, however, takes the genre to another level. It is truly, beyond all others, about mature love. Beyond the fun glimpse into the period through the eyes of the various characters, including a look at the cross-continent trading as well as the lives of the ton, the novel is filled with characters who are complex and compelling, who have stories of their own to tell even if they're not the focus of this book. And Nick and Ellie are definitely among those complex characters.

The story looks at the consequences of two soul mates who found each other when they were too young and still under control, actual and manipulation, of her father. Torn apart by this, neither has been able to move beyond that young love despite the passage of ten years and a lot of maturing. The "coming home" theme in contemporary romance is one I enjoy because there's time for their emotions to mature. I just never expected to find it in a historical romance.

At first, Nick is bent on revenge for how Ellie broke his heart, and she's determined never to let herself be that vulnerable again. They have very real reasons for their attitudes, and both are guilty at least in part, but the book is about how they move past old pains and open themselves to a new future. It's not simply explaining what happened, or even taking responsibility for each of their choices. It's complicated both by the need for self-preservation and by wounds that stab deeper than rational thought.

The Marquess Who Loved Me has the sensual/sexual content people have come to expect, but maybe not in the way they expect. Unlike the latest trends, the initial encounters are all about dominance as in Nick taking the control over Ellie that he thought she had taken over him when she dismissed him as unworthy of her hand. There's a lot more to that particular story, of course, but Nick saw only her cruel cut and comes back determined to own her in every way. It could have gone very dark. Instead, love rears its ugly (to both of them) head and undermines both of their plans to stay untouched and safe.

On top of all of the witty dialogue mixed with social commentary and deep soul searching, there's also a murderer afoot, the need to keep it secret, and the possibility of betrayal from all sides.

It might sound a bit crowded, and in another's hands, it might have been, but every piece from Nick's revenge to Ellie's paintings fit together smoothly. Where something might come from the outside such as the murderer, it is even more likely a result of the blend of relationships and hatreds in their inner circle. Every phrase has a double meaning, and every meaning only serves to offer a plausible, if unwanted, answer to the questions stewing in the minds of the characters.

I started reading another title I'd received through NetGalley and found myself unable to finish for reasons other than craft. Though Sara Ramsey's novel was not next on the list, I thought it might serve as, shall we say, a pallet cleanser. It did that and more. I found myself making excuses to extend my reading time just that bit further, and even got back on the elliptical to capture ten more reading minutes. While I enjoy much of what I read, I don't always seek out other books by the author immediately. In this case, I'm planning to pick up the rest of this series which, I hope, will offer the rest of the tale for certain of the other characters I met and enjoyed.

P.S. NetGalley provided this title in return for an honest review.

The cover was great! I just wished the book was better.
I thought Ellie and Nicks story was okay. It was not as good as the other 2 in the series. I liked both of their characters but didn't really feel their love connections as much as with her other books. Yes it was good sex scenes but wanted more then that between H and h.

I thought the parties would of been more scandolous since Ellie she seem more mysterious always up to something in the other books. The book dragged at times but i did enjoy the mystery of someone trying to kill Nick. The secondary characters always good in her books i think they keep you from getting bored at times with main ones arent that interesting at times. I also like catching up with couples from previous books. I can't wait for Prudence's book. You just want her to finally get her knight in shing armour.

I would recomend this series because it is a good read and interesting people and plots. .
