Psychiatry and metaphysics blend together in this fascinating book based on a true case history. Dr. Weiss, who was once firmly entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, finds himself reluctantly drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details of her previous lives. During one hypnosis session his client introduces the spirit guides who have been her soul therapists in between lives. This is when the story really takes off for Weiss, who discovers that these guides have specific messages about his dead son as well as Weiss's mission in life. No, we cannot verify the truth of this story using the limited scientific tools we have available. However, it is hard to dispute that this well-respected graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School has discovered a personal truth that has led him to be an enormously popular speaker, author, and leader in the field of past-life therapy. --Gail Hudson

Even though the part where it had been described how the reincarnation theory had been eliminated from the christian bible centuries ago this book is still one of the best "friends" in difficult lifetime situations. What has been part of the Buddhist believes, the reincarnation, is now proven also by Western cultures. Without being affected by religions this book is suitable for everybody to improve interpersonal relationships. This book should be a must read in any school in the world to make people open minded, to make the world better, to reduce hate and unfairness, to prevent wars, to bring trust and harmony amongst the people.

Believe it or not I was given ''guidance'' about finding this title on Amazon's website and as another reviewer points out the author neatly sidesteps the Christian/religious issues and concentrates solely on his well substantiated theories of regressive therapy. For me it was gem of a read which was similtaneously enthralling and evocative.
There were just so many statements that closely matched my own experiences that frankly I felt as though I could even BE Catherine but I was perturbed about the declaration from the Master Spirit about ''only God can punish.'' I have no religious leanings but seem to recall that it is well documented in Christian teachings that God does not punish and further on Weiss also makes a reference to one patient's encounter with hell stating that sometimes you get what you expect but it may not be real and these are two main reasons why, for me, in spite of my personal experiences doubts inevitably crept in.
How indeed can any of us prove that we have had the Masters' guidance unless we actually die, float into our next physical body, surf the net and review the book again!
The human brain can play the most dreadful tricks - in hospital and fed drugs against my will I endured an hallucinatory experience which was about as close to ''hell'' that I would ever want to get! Physiologically, human beings all have the same make up so it stands to reason that thousands of us would ''remember'' similar lives under hypnosis. The book enabled me to interpret my own experiences with greater clarity but the logical me still embraces doubts, not about the authenticity of Dr Weiss' studies - far from it - but about our entire comprehension of birth, death and ''life'' beyond the realms of our earthly existence.

I opened this book to "peek" at the beginning and before I knew it I had read the whole thing in a sitting. Fascinating story told simply and convincingly; you see the story unfold through his eyes. The words of the masters were profound and thought-provoking. I need a copy for my shelf!

The subject is certainly interesting and fascinating, and I actually tend to believe in reincarnation. But what was made of it is disappointing. One has to be open minded, but that does not mean that a sound sense of criticism should be thrown over board altogether. I am not a scientist, but even to me the book appears to be too shallow. There are contradictions and I find it extremely strange that none of Catherine's visions of past lives were discussed with historians, anthropologists, etc. to verify whether the accounts make any sense at all. The sessions or their recording appeared to have no founded system, and I read the word "amateurish" in another review by a professional, which does not surprise me.
From an entertainment point of view I was not too impressed either, as the book gets rather repetitive.

Picture this: a middle-aged, Ivy-League-trained psychiatrist hypnotizes an astonishingly gorgeous 28-year-old woman and ends up learning about her past lives. Lots of past lives. Right. So why couldn't I put the book down till I'd finished the whole thing? Well, I liked the idea that souls can travel through many lives together and get to make karmic choices in the process. I liked the idea that the point we're supposed to learn from all these experiences is the essential nature of "charity, hope, faith, love" (p. 85). I didn't like the prospect of lots more incarnations, though (this one I'm in now is exhausting enough).

Many Lives, Many Masters is easy and entertaining to read. In this book, Dr. Weiss, describes the past life explorations of a patient he referred to as Catherine. Catherine suffered from a wide-range of fears and after unsuccessful treatment using his standard psychiatric techniques, Dr. Weiss decided to experiment with hypnotherapy and ask Catherine to return to the time when the problems originated. The entire book goes back and forth over Catherine's various lifetimes - she apparently had 86 lifetimes, but only several seemed significant for helping Catherine deal with issues she was facing at a time when she visited Dr. Weiss.

At times in this book Dr. Weiss sounded as if he were trying to convince either himself or the readers of the validity of experiences presented in this book. From therapeutic standpoint though, while historical details of past life regressions may be debatable, past life regression is considered one of many useful tools in hypnotherapy for clearing inner obstacles and perplexing issues. And in this book, through this lengthy process of exploring Catherine's different experiences, not only did her current fears clear spontaneously, but some spiritual powers started to emerge.

Apart from Catherine's account of her experiences, in the interlude between her lives, other spiritual beings to whom Dr. Weiss refers to as "masters" would come true and offer tidbits of spiritual wisdom. Some of the wisdom came from Catherine's higher level of awareness, like:

"We all have abilities far beyond what we use. Some of us find this out sooner than others."

"You should check your vices. If you do not, you carry them over with you to another life. Only we can rid ourselves of the bad habits that we accumulate we we are in the physical state. ...
