I read about half of these stories as a teenager, and they have certainly held up. That is, the mysteries are for the most part satisfying little puzzles, but the main interest is the detective, the cultured intellectual man-about-the-galaxy, Magnus Ridolph. Debonair, clever, and always looking out for a way to support his rich but not excessive lifestyle, Magnus Ridolph goes about the far-future settled galaxy, interacting with a plethora of races and species, solving problems for the baffled and impatient, and always coming out on top. He’s a futuristic peer of Sherlock, Mycroft, and Nero, functioning in a complex society with all the color and squalor of a 19th century colonial setting.

Tales of scoundrels and aliens with truly alien attitudes, but while mostly structured as mysteries they're not very satisfying mysteries since they usually turn on some made-up technology or fact about alien culture known to Magnus but not the reader until the reveal.

Des nouvelles qui font partie des "classiques" de Vance enfin regroupées dans un ouvrage et retravaillée dans leur forme originale de l'auteur (suite au projet VIE). On y retrouve le talent de l'auteur pour les situations et personnages truculents, à la morale parfois élastique (par rapport à celle communément admise dans nos contrées). Le format de nouvelles ne permet pas à Vance de donner tout la mesure de son inventivité qui, à mon avis, excelle le plus dans les novellas ou courts romans, mais cela reste des oeuvres importantes de l'auteur.

Magnus Ridolph is not Vance at his very best, but it's still enjoyable. If you know and love Jack Vance, don't hesitate, this will not disappoint. Oh, and if you like Magnus Ridolph, then you owe it to yourself to check out Matthew Hughes's wonderful books, Majestrum, The Spiral Labyrinth, Hespira, and 9 Tales of Hengis Hapthorn, all of which feature Hughes's own take on the "galactic private eye," if you will, in a gracious and eloquent style that is both reminiscent of Vance and, at the same time, original and unique. And while Vance is the grand master, sans doute, in this particular sub-genre, I do believe Hughes excels even Vance. So, by all means, read Magnus Ridolph, and then check out Hughes.
