I've known the work of this era of the Moody Blues, in which Denny Laine was the guitarist and lead singer (with Clint Warwick on bass and vocals), alongside Mike Pinder (piano, vocals), Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica, vocals), and Graeme Edge (drums), for many decades. In fairness, I was one of the initially bewildered when I first discovered that material, having purchased the GO NOW album, as it was known in the US, thinking it would be somewhat along the lines of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED etc. But I soon took to this version of the band as well, except that there was never enough of them to grab onto like the later iteration of the group -- till now, that is.

And none of the previously issued material, most especially the single "Go Now," has ever sounded remotely as good as it does in this set. Digitized for the first time from the ORIGINAL master tapes (long missing or overlooked), this is the definitive and authoritative edition of this era of the band, in which they were closer to the Rolling Stones than to the Beatles. The crispness of the playing and the presence of all of the singing is phenomenal on the first disc -- "From The Bottom Of My Heart" brings chills down my spine it's so THERE in the playback (and one of the most extraordinary of British-invasion era singles). The second disc is filled with revelations, all previously unissued renditions (many significantly different from the versions we know) of seemingly familiar fare, laced with a few tracks new to us ("You Better Move On" a weird gospel piece built on the 23rd Psalm, etc.), the early band's surviving BBC sessions (live in the studio -- and boy did Graeme Edge love that bass drum!), plus remnants of a never-finished second album that may amaze even longtime fans. The BBC stuff consists of mostly familiar songs done in some unfamiliar ways, as far as the nuances and the recording textures (and microphone set-ups), plus interviews -- I love Edge's drumming on that rendition of "Go Now," and to have a live-in-the-studio version of "From The Bottom of My Heart," with a devastating vocal performance by Denny Laine, is almost worth the price of the set by itself (though the re-mastering of the familiar studio version is a powerful listening experience in and off itself); and a live version of "I've Got a Dream" (an overlooked jewel of their early library) is priceless.

The lost/unfinished second album was very much a transition out of their r&b roots into a more sophisticated brand of British invasion pop/rock -- "Sad Song" and most of the other originals here weren't likely to set the charts on fire, but the latter as part of an LP it was a good opener (and "We're Broken" has a great beat), and I think the band might have been able to chart with "Hang On To A Dream," had they had a chance to issue one of their recordings of it.

In all, it's well worth the fresh investment of money and time.

4.0 von 5 Sternen FINALLY! THIS EARLY SLICE OF ENGLISH BEAT/R&B/POP GETS THE "DELUXE" REISSUE. 14. Januar 2015
Von Stuart Jefferson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 2015 2 CD EDITION OF "THE MAGNIFICENT MOODIES" BOX SET.

I've been waiting for an expanded reissue of this album for years. I still play the 1992 reissue from the Repertoire label (with seven extra tracks and Donovan's original liner notes), but now I can put that edition away. This is for those Anglophiles who are steeped in the Beat/R&B/Pop sounds coming out of England in the mid/late '60s. There's no Mellotron to be heard anywhere on this album. No ethereal sounds to compliment the sometimes cosmic lyrics that was (and is) popular with fans. I too like the "later" Moody Blues--those first few albums are all classics of a kind. I gave this new edition four "stars", but I was tempted to add a fifth "star" simply because I really like this album--this is one of those albums I "grew up" with--when I discovered English bands in the mid/late '60s. So I'm obviously biased. This album is also available as a 2015, single CD edition with added tracks.

This first album focuses on the relatively tougher sounds that many bands were playing during this period. Listen to Ray Thomas (known for his floating flute sound in the later band) playing harmonica on the fierce version of "Bye Bye Bird". Or the bluesy "I Don't Mind". Or something close to a Beat-era sound with "Time Is On My Side". For R&B check out "Steal Your Heart Away". And for something close to Pop listen to their version of "I've Got A Dream", or the '66 version of "I Really Haven't Got The Time". And Laine's "Go Now!" is a small classic performance from the era. With the original album, singles, live stuff, demos, etc., this is all I hoped this new "Deluxe" edition would be. The digitally remastered/analogue to digital transfers in original mono sound is very good--except Disc 2 tracks 21-29 which are in nice sounding stereo. But I was worried that the original slightly fuzzy sound of their hit single, "Go Now!", would somehow sound clean and crisp in this new edition, taking away that authentic period sound early fans (like me) came to know and like. But the original sound is still there in all it's slightly fuzzy glory. The booklet is very informative about this era and version of the band, and has some great period photographs. The postcards/fan club cards, along with the 9"X18" (double-sided) poster are pretty nifty. The graphics too are nicely done. And it's cool to have the liner notes from Donovan ("the sounds of blues came mellow, rolling, it moved me somewhere else...just let it pass through you") on the back of the album cover. All in all a great reissue of an unsung album from that era.

Others have dissected this new collection of songs in their reviews, which is great for all of us. But I just wanted to say that this album is important for a few reasons--the early band's choice of tunes, their sound, and the fact that this version of the band didn't last beyond this first album. And all that is what makes this new edition a small classic that once again fans can revel in. Even if you have never really heard this album, and/or are a fan of the band's later work beginning with their second album, this new edition will reward the music fan who approaches it for what it is (and isn't), a good set of period tunes which is an example of a short span of time in England before the music scene exploded every which way. It's innocent sounding yet "tough" in it's own way. Even the Coca-Cola commercial is pretty cool--short but tough sounding.

All these years later it's difficult to remember (and impossible if you weren't around then) what music was like back then. This is a small sign post of English bands/music that lasted only for a short time. But in it's own way this album is a classic of/from that era. Shortly after these recordings Laine left the band as did Warwick later, and the Moody Blues' sound changed into what eventually became their most popular sound with those first few albums. For those of us who can remember this album originally as a slightly mysterious ("Moody Blues"--what's that mean?) vinyl "import" at the record store, this is a great day with this 2 CD reissue. Cheers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Blues at It's Best 6. Februar 2015

True that this is not the Moody Blues who had later become a rather melodic and "orchestral" group with an instrument known as the mellotron. This was the original Moody Blues known for just that - BLUES. The original core of the group, Mike Pinder, Graham Edge and Ray Thomas, were here along with Clint Warwick on bass and Denny Laine who would later go on to join Paul McCartney and Wings. That really big hit "Go Now" is here in 3 different versions.I really love the classic blues number "I Go Crazy"and "Can't Nobody Love You". There are several singles that didn't quite make it and a plethora of BBC Sessions as well as Different versions of songs from Denny Cordell Sessions. I have not heard a lot of these tunes in a while and I also have an earlier digipak version from Repertoire Records of Germany, which just encompasses the first disc of this set. By the way, did I mention that this is a 2 disc deluxe set that is boxed rather than wrapped in the plastic overlay that comes with the usual deluxe sets. This is great blues at it's best and is one for the "records".

5.0 von 5 Sternen Blues music beget musical greatness. 12. September 2016

I like the fact that the Moody Blues had a blues origin, hence, their name says what they play. It's obviously not the experimental music they are famous for. Still, they are professional and engaging in their music as a blues team. It is the sixties sound that many groups laid the tracks in that genre. Overall, I enjoy this early Moody Blues in the same way that I enjoy other groups that took that route and reinvented themselves by the late sixties when music exploded into new sensational music. Listen to the early sound and experience the makings of greatness.

this is for the 26 song version. All studio tracks which is enough for me. Im glad they changed their style when justin and john came in and become one of the greatest bands of all time. There are good songs here too but source recordings hinder the remastering. Thi s is really for us diehard fans not those who are hoping to hear the band we are so familiar witi. I like the album and wasn t expecting much . So im not disappointed but would be careful who i recommend it to.
