This book (together with "Positivity" from Barbara Fredrickson) has become a practical lifeguide to me. I have been suffering from depression for years and these two books gave me so much more than classical psychotherapy (which most frequently concentrates on what is wrong instead of what makes life worth living). It started a process of focussing on the right things, of creating intense and deep positive emotions and - what is the content of this book - true and warm connection to other people. It is not about enhancing self-esteem or by enabling to defend yourself. It is more about becoming who you really are, including a natural acceptance of yourself. Try this - it will be nourishing to you if you open to it.
Note: together with these books I can also recommend the books of Jon Kabat-Zinn on mindfullness. They complement one another very well.
