Komplette Reihe

The only thing hotter than the summers in Phoenix is the temper of a police detective who can’t figure out why young girls keep disappearing. Katalina Wimple is that detective. Her obsession with the missing girls makes her the best person for the job, but it also serves as a refuge from the problems in her own life.

Battling her own demons offers coincidences impossible to ignore. Rescuing the missing girls will require Kat figuring out how much coincidence is too much, as well as fighting her desire for what she can’t have.

1.0 von 5 Sternen At least I didn't pay for it 4. Oktober 2012
Von W Spice - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I seem to be in the minority here, since most reviewers liked not just the story and the writing, but even the protagonist.
Me? Not so much. Okay, the premise wasn't bad, nor was the world-building, though it could have used a little more detail, maybe, and, from a plotting standpoint, the story was well enough executed. I do resent the fact that there was no foreshadowing of the final culprit. It would've been nice for the reader to try to figure things out instead of letting Kat's computer bud do so, creating a sort of deus ex machina conclusion.

As for the technical writing, I felt some serious copy-editing was needed. Lack of proper punctuation made some sentences hard to read. In the same sentence, "them" in the main clause becomes "it" in the subordinate clause. There are verb tense issues. At times, the writing is really awkward. "it would cause more attention and trouble if I ran into trouble." A very "troubling" sentence. I can't believe any editor would let that slide. Antecedents to pronouns are often unclear. There are other issues, too, but, suffice it to say, from the standpoint of craftsmanship, I found the writing amateurish and distracting.

My biggest disappointment was with Kat. I'm amazed to see so many positive reviews, especially some from women. For me, this was so obviously a male writing a female character from a male point of view that Kat never rang true to me, particularly as a first person narrator. Her breast fixation was extremely annoying. Her description of the other women of the story was blatantly sexist, clearly male fantasy wish-fulfillment on the author's part, I thought. Also, the "men are pigs" card was seriously over-played. There was even some verbal bashing of a gay male. The attempt to evoke sympathy for Kat because of her rape was not badly done, but, ultimately, it wasn't enough to overcome the other shortcomings of the book.

I confess, I found Kat's character so jarring that I checked out the Amazon teaser of Halstead's _Traitors_, and found the
relationship between Kat and Nathalie was much more convincing. Still, I'm not at all sure that I will eventually read anything more from this author. Obviously, not recommended, even if it's free.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Katalina is like NO other cop you have ever met or read about! 19. Oktober 2011

When girls start disappearing, they call on Katalina Wimple. They know, she will not give up until she finds out what is happening to them, and who is behind it! Katalina is in a class all her own! Both as a person and, especially, as a cop! She is a tough bad ass cop, but she has a softer side. Though she only allows a very select few to catch a small glimpse of it every now and then. She is smart, fearless, a smart ass (which I love) and a bit self sabotaging. But aren't we all a bit self sabotaging, to some degree or another?

This book pulls you in and makes you feel like you are right there with Kat, every step of the way. And you can't wait to see what Katalina is going to get into next. I lost several hours of sleep, because I couldn't put it down. When you read this book, be prepared to run the gambit of emotions!

Jason Halstead has a way of capturing the female psyche that VERY few men can even imagine; much less be able to put on paper. He is talented and has "fierce" writing skills!

The only complaint I have is that, eventhough the book stands alone in the series, I wish I had read Dark Earth first. It would have been good to have some more insight about Katalina, the VDI and the portals.

If you want a book that combines almost every emotion, with action, humor, fantasy, sci fi and a bit of romance, then this is the book to read!!

I liked Dark Earth. This book is set in the future and barely has any SciFi or Fantasy. It's more like a Gay (no slur intended) relationship book. Read Dark Earth, skip this one. Jason, if you read this, please do a sequel to Dark Earth that is more like the second half of Dark Earth. I enjoyed it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great Book 22. Juni 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
I really liked this book as it was fast pased and keep my wanting to get to the end, there is a lot action in this book as well as a great number of sexual overtones, which didn't throw off the story. it is about a "COP" in the future of America who has plenty of implants, the only problem is that with all these upgrades, she never really uses them to her advantage but always getting into trouble and keeps getting more time added to here employers contract. Overall good book, looking forward to reading the others

Kat, a cop with some major attitude, is working a hot case - women are going missing in Phoenix and the case is becoming personal. Judging by the steady increase in attempts on her life, she's close to solving it - if she can only manage to stay alive.

I love me some action and suspense, and boy does this book have it. Close quarters fighting, bullets flying, creeping around in abandoned warehouses, bodies piling up... the only thing it was missing was a high-speed car chase, but that doesn't exactly work so well in book form so I'll let it slide. (Jason, you should totally put a car chase in your next book) AND it's set in alternative universe/futuristic Phoenix to boot. I'm totally lovin' that.

Not only is Kat fighting to save the lives of these missing women, she's fighting to save her own - literally and figuratively. Between getting almost-killed a few times, she's nursing a giant chip on her shoulder that's majorly interfering with her settling down with a nice girl. (Though that certainly doesn't keep her from doing some major flirting...) She's also got some issues cropping up from her past that are keeping her from being able to enjoy the life that she has.
