A unique twist to common travel guidebooks. . . . [Eubanks] makes familiar destinations new again.
-"Our State"

Georgann Eubanks has not written a guidebook; she has furnished a cheerful and personable and wonderfully informed companion to take us along the literary leafy tracks and briary bypaths of the North Carolina mountains. Welcome one and all, reader and traveler, to blue-green vistas of pleasure!
-Fred Chappell

Georgann Eubanks proves to be the perfect tour guide--knowledgeable, companionable, insightful, and often surprising. A perfect book for the armchair traveler as well as the actual tourist.

Synopsis

This guidebook is the first of three regional volumes that invite residents and out-of-state visitors to explore North Carolina while reading literature from our state's finest writers. Organized geographically through a series of eighteen half-day and day-long tours in the western part of the state, the book directs curious travelers to the historic sites where Tar Heel authors have lived and worked. Along the way, travelers can read outstanding excerpts from the writers, evoking the places, customs, colloquialisms, and characters that figure prominently in their poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and plays. More than 170 writers from the past and present are featured in this volume, including Sequoyah, Elizabeth Spencer, Fred Chappell, Charles Frazier, Kathryn Stripling Byer, Robert Morgan, William Bartram, Gail Godwin, O. Henry, Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Anne Tyler, Lillian Jackson Braun, Nina Simone, and Romulus Linney. Each tour provides information about the libraries, museums, colleges, bookstores, and other venues open to the public where writers regularly present their work or are represented in exhibits, events, performances, and festivals.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The perfect literary guidebook. 21. März 2009
Von Sue Diehl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

A fascinating guidebook to North Carolina's rich literary history. This volume covers the western mountains of the state, and I eagerly await the promised volumes on the Piedmont and the Eastern shore. The guide is so fascinating and packed full of interesting tidbits that it leads the reader to want to explore the sites and volumes depicted. Whether the suggested titles are a first introduction to a work or a provocation to revisit a book by a North Carolina writer or one in which the setting is in this wonderful state, the guide can easily serve as selection tool for building one's regional literary collection.
The maps of the trails are very clear, the photography wonderfully elucidates the text, and the compilation of fascinating stories behind the writings provides the incentive to plan day trips to explore the locales depicted and to read, read, read the titles included.
Eubanks should be applauded for creating the ultimate literary guide.

Linking of writing to the sites, settings, and reality of places was very well done. Comments from writers about the places and about writing were interesting and well aimed to readers and,as well as to aspiring writers. Would recommend this to students, travelers, and readers who are either interested in NC mountain life, or who,as I am are blessed to live here.

This interested me more than the Piedmont trail issue did.

Either book serves as a literary trail guide but I didn't expect the inclusion of the peripheral sites.
They make the book too long.

All said, it is a good guide.

Author knows vast amount on her subject, and writes in a style that's highly readable. This, along with a decent map and dulcimer music in your c.d. player, will deeply enrich your visit to the N.C. mountains. It's a book to savor and keep.

We love the North Carolina Mountains and this book makes our road trips even richer. Great bits of history and little known facts about our favorite books and authors.
