I have read this book several times, and though I am already 19 years old this book is the source of joy, even if one is sad.
The lioness, has received a letter of an old women, who turned out to be Halef Seif's mother, when she tried to rescue her from burning. The women died and Halef Seif refused to take the letter, telling Allan, she would like the way the map shows her. So Allana takes the chance and rides eastward with Coram. On her journey she meets the Shang Dragon and the Princess of Tusain, Thayet and her friend.
Nevertheless the end of her journey is not the Mistral, but again she and her friends have to save Tortall from Duke Roger...
A really good book not only for children, with great, enthusiastic characters.

To begin with, I had a hard time deciding which of the Lioness books to review. I picked this one because it ties as my favorite with IN THE HAND OF THE GODESS. But it was a hard choice. The Lioness books, first read when I was twelve, really got me started on fantasy. Of course, I'd read Tolkien and Beagle, but not much else. I read Pierce's books and have been a devoted fantasy reader ever since. I'm now nineteen and I still reread the Lioness books and love them just as much. Alanna is a firey, spirited young woman and a wonderful hero--human and complete with fualts. By this time she has grown and progressed as a character so that she feels very, very real. The other characters always make me smile, and the ending always makes me cry. The writing style, well suited to young readers, moves you along and keeps you turning pages. This book, granted a darker one than the others, resolves many of the issues presented in the previous books in a believable and entertaining fashion. Finally, I am extremely glad Alanna marries George. He is one of my favorite rouges in all fantasy. Unfortunetly, this series has ruined Tamora Pierce for me. It was so good that her other series simply don't measure up. I entreat any lover of fantasy to read these books--I hope you love them as much as I do!

Okay, this is a wonderful conclusion to an incredible series. Roger is the perfect villain - he has some human qualities. He has good things abut him - likable, suave, charming, as well as being evil. I loved the thing between Myles and Eleni Cooper, and that the Ralon of Malven end was tied up. Brilliant! Okay, here's the one thing - Alanna and Jon belong together! In the original draft of the book, Alanna and Jon did marry, but then TP changed it, though God knows why. Anyway, what about the fact that Thayet wanted to be a commoner and start a school? what about the fact that Alanna and George's parent's are getting together? What about the fact that the Woman Who Rides Like a Man and the Voice of the Tribes getting together would bring lots of attention to the tribe that has female shamans? What about the fact that nobody, but nobody, would be able to stop Kel from being a knight if Alanna were queen? I could go on. For all you Little Women fans out there, I could cite Jo and Laurie...

This book was terrible! Allana has completly transformed from the tough knight she was in the first two books. I know she was supposed to have changed, and in the book everyone said it was for the better, but I thought her transformation was for the MUCH MUCH worse.
Another thing that really bothered me about this book is that it seemed that she completly forgot about George. It was like she said to the Dragon guy, "I've only know you for two days, but my boyfriend's across the country, so I'm going to sleep with you instead." Give me a break! Is she now sleeping with every other guy she comes across! Also, it seemed like she was crying every other page. I know SOME [really dumb] people might think that this was considered getting in touch with her FEMMININE side. Not really. Basicly the message was "women can't be tough". I really think that is a bunch of garbage (I'd use a stronger word, but amazon probably wouldn't allow it). Overall, I really hated this book.

The song of the lioness is one of the best series I have read. I first read them when I was thirteen They were in my school library and I really enjoy them. But when I changed schools I couldn't find them anywhere, but I thought that I would read them again and they wouldn't be as good as they were when I was in grade 8. But I found them again when I was searching amazon books, I ordered the first one and it was just as good as I remembered so I ordered them all. I think that the ending was great and fit perfectly. People complain that she didn't end up with the person they wanted her to, but that is part of the story. it shows that it doesn't conform to the typical fairytale storyline. I really liked this series but I was a little disapointed with The immortals series. I don't think that they had the same depth. As for age level, I personally think that If you can read you are old enough for these book, and you can continue reading them 'till thay nail your coffin shut.

I finished the series on a plane from Florida. I was enchanted while I read, entranced even for a while after. But when the spell wore off, I realized that while the plot is good, the characters are flat and underdeveloped, and the stories are without any deeper significance. It's a good, light, superficial read but will not really leave any impressions on the soul. In Tortall, things float in and out without leaving traces (like some of Alanna's thief friends, Gary, and Raoul), and some of the things that are most important in the first novels (the Ordeal) don't really matter in the others. Alanna really doesn't think too much about the Ordeal after it's over. The series is good, but not great. Fine for younger readers, OK for older ones too, but make sure that there are REAL fantasy stories available too. I recommend it but will also say that Sabriel (Garth Nix) is much better and is fully rounded, with a four-dimensional world like our own.
