Vintage Opera e-Library Edition 2012
Apart from Wagner's Autobiography and his short essay "On Conducting", this e-book is the first collection of Wagner's writings to be made available commercially for the Kindle.
Based on the 1925 edition of the book by Burlingame, these translations were the first in the English language and were originally published in 1875, during Wagner's lifetime.
They cover a selection of Wagner's essays from the staging of his early opera "Das Liebesverbot" to his detailed plans for the Bayreuth Opera House. Included are also two rare fictional stories that Wagner wrote in his early career.
The text was set from page images of the original book, scanned and OCR'd.
It then underwent extensive proofing and editing for this edition; although the book is presented in its entirety, many printing errors that appear in the original have been corrected, including spelling for the numerous German, French and Italian terms used by Wagner and mantained in Burlingame's translation.
All italics have been restored where appropriate and British spelling has been used throughout for consistency.
Burlingame's translation, while dating back to 1875, proves to be very readable: it is never "obtrusive", but allows us to immerse into Wagner's writings and forget that we are reading a translation rather than the original.
We feel this book offers an invaluable insight into the mind of the Maestro
