Soprano Chen Reiss makes her first recording for ONYX, and has chosen a programme of arias by Cimarosa, Haydn, Salieri and Mozart - all composers working in Vienna in the 1780s. Included here are some 'insertion' arias by Haydn and Mozart composed for use in operas by other composers such as Amfossi, Gugliemi and Martin forgotten names today. So here we have liaisons on stage - secret marriages and affairs, and liaisons between composers. Chen Reiss appears in leading roles at La Scala, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, and Frankfurt Opera. She also sang the soundtrack to the film Das Parfum (Perfume) with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle. Chen Reiss starred with Rolando Villazon on German TV in an opera gala show. She sings Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier in December 2011 at the Staatsoper Wien. Bayerische Staatsoper - Rosenkavalier (Sophie) With these [exposed high notes], on the other hand, Chen Reiss has no problems at all. Singing so brilliantly silvery, as one wishes to hear from Sophie; and at the same time, she is every inch the hyperactive, highly naïve girl. Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany
Her flexible, crystalline voice reached the furthest corners of the hall, and her intonation was flawless. --Opera Now, UK<br \><br \>Sopranos with flawless height, steady depth and sophisticated technique are rather rare. American soprano Chen Reiss however, presenting the concert at the cathedral in Schleswig turned out to be a dazzling and charming representative of this rare species! --Schleswig Holsteiner Zeitung, Germany.
What a stimulating assemblage of arias, and intelligent,standard-setting performances.Soprano Chen Reiss creates a rewarding vocal cross section of Mozart-era Vienna-not as easy as one might think given the drop in quality between Mozart,Haydn and then everyone else.Resoursefully,Reiss groups her 'finds'-some hardly known because of they're one-off arias written for forgotten operas by other composers-around engaging archetypes such as the wily maidservant who controls her master. My favourite moment is how wonderstruck her Susanna sounds while absorbing the beauties of the night(Figaro act 4 aria). --Gramophone,Nov'11
Soprano Chen Reiss has an agile, bell-bright ,fluty timbre that s well suited to the soubrette and coloratura repertoire here. She's best in the showy numbers-the glittering roulades of the Mozart concert aria Ah se in ciel and Salieri's Tremo bell idol mio are bright and fresh. She also displays a lovely line in the short sweet Quando la rosa . *** --Classic fm Magazine,Dec'11
