Synopsis

The tritone photographs in this book are based on language which Friedlander found on the walls and in the streets of America. The book starts with an alphabet, goes into numerals and then into sentences - referring to the roots of language itself. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I thought this was a bit of an enigma of a book. On the one hand its 88 pages are huge (13.25 by 14.5 inches) with 213 photos beautifully printed in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi using 300 screen tritones but on the other hand the visual contents don't really justify this production opulence. Friedlander's Desert Seen photos would have looked stunning in a book of this size and production.

The editorial format is nicely worked out: the first eighty-seven photos are cropped images of the alphabet in capitals followed by numbers and an ampersand. The rest of the photos are combinations of letters merging into graffiti statements and by their nature these tend to be personal to the scribblers and instantly forgettable to everyone else.

Because the photos tend to be close-ups so that the letters and statements can be read there is no opportunity to enjoy Friedlander's playful knack of layering a composition into the distance with all sorts of fascinating distractions for the eye.

The photos would have worked equally well in a book a quarter of the page size and the prices charged on the net are as over-indulged as the contents.

HASH(0x8d289bb8) von 5 Sternen My Favorite Friedlander 25. Januar 2012
Von Dennis Witmer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Ok--I have a lot of Friedlander books I like--but I think this is still my favorite--at least in part because they must have printed too many of them--it was published in 1993, and there are still new copies available at under the published price of $125--so unlike many of Friedlander's other books, this one is still affordable...

The idea for this book apparently came from Walker Evans (who was also the originator of the idea for Robert Frank's "The Americans")--it begins with photographs of the letter "A", in various "fonts" (many hand painted--does that qualify as a "font"?)--then runs through the alphabet, into the numbers, and into short phrases that read like poems--"Art the Rat" and "Her loins were hot" and other sayings that Amazon won't allow to be used in reviews (I know this because my last review, written 2 years ago was rejected because I quoted Friedlander's photographic quote of someone using the F-word along with "the Rich"--they must have been Obama voters)...

Anyway, the book is pure Friedlander, beautifully printed, and still one of my favorite books in my collection (which is not small...)
