What company doesn’t want energized workers, delighted customers, genuine efficiency, and breakthrough innovation? The Lean Mindset shows how lean companies really work–and how a lean mindset is the key to creating stunning products and delivering amazing services.

Through cutting-edge research and case studies from leading organizations, including Spotify, Ericsson, Intuit, GE Healthcare, Pixar, CareerBuilder, and Intel, you’ll discover proven patterns for developing that mindset. You’ll see how to cultivate product teams that act like successful startups, create the kind of efficiency that attracts customers, and leverage the talents of bright, creative people.

The Poppendiecks weave lean principles throughout this book, just as those principles must be woven throughout the fabric of your truly lean organization.

Learn How To

  • Start with an inspiring purpose, and overcome the curse of short-term thinking
  • Energize teams by providing well-framed challenges, larger purposes, and a direct line of sight between their work and the achievement of those purposes
  • Delight customers by gaining unprecedented insight into their real needs, and building products and services that fully anticipate those needs
  • Achieve authentic, sustainable efficiency without layoffs, rock-bottom cost focus, or totalitarian work systems
  • Develop breakthrough innovations by moving beyond predictability to experimentation, beyond globalization to decentralization, beyond productivity to impact

Lean approaches to software development have moved from novelty to widespread use, in large part due to the principles taught by Mary and Tom Poppendieck in their pioneering books. Now, in The Lean Mindset, the Poppendiecks take the next step, looking at a company where multidiscipline teams are expected to ask the right questions, solve the right problems, and deliver solutions that customers love.

Format: Taschenbuch
Lean Mindset by Mary and Tom Poppendieck is only 160 pages long, but it packs a punch: companies that follow the agile way of building software driven by customer needs will eventually deliver a good result. But good does not mean exciting nor innovative. Just good does not set you apart from any other software company out there and makes you replaceable as a service provider.

In their book Mary and Tom take the reader on a quest that eventually leads to finding the answer for the most powerful question: how can organizations create breakthrough innovations in a predictable (or at least sustainable) way?

Chapter by chapter they lay out their understanding of the fundamentals that are needed to build software that truly serves the customer, and they don’t all short on highlighting what’s needed to achieve that: engaged employees with a deep understanding of the underlying business rules, a clear purpose and vision for the product they are building. Every section is supported by a real-world case study so you don’t have to take their word for granted, but can see the respective theories in action in real life.

This book easily made it to the top of my reading recommendation for managers, founders, and developers as well. Keep a copy of the book handy, so you can check once in a while their questions to ponder provided after every chapter.

Confession 1: I've only read the first 2/3rds of the book so far on my Kindle. I haven't finished yet, but I had to write this review because I think the book is awesome.
Confession 2: I've known Tom and Mary Poppendieck, the authors, for about a decade now, so I am biased. I love the way they think, I love the way they write. Their first book changed my career direction (and, consequently, my salary). So, I'm biased.

This book is great. It's different to what I expected though, compared to their previous work - it's less hands on, more conceptual and high-level. It reminds of the interesting parts of my MBA, but better written, and more focused on product development. I'm familiar with many of the ideas in the book (because I read the same books, talk to the same people, and watch the same videos as the authors) but what they've done so well is to take a vast number of ideas & concepts & tools, summarise them, then group them into themes. The book isn't cheap so I recommend you take a look at the sample or look inside at the index.

My favourite story is Doug Deitz's, from GE Healthcare. Even if you don't buy this book, you really should google is TEDX talk from San Jose. I'm a gnarly old engineer, at heart, and I teared up.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I recommend this book for anyone who wants to be Leaner in their work practices, especially in the Software World 2. November 2013

I like the way the Poppendieck's write but more specifically I like the way they think. We've begun to see methods like Scrum being used as just another PM method without actually changing the way the project is being run or the volume of unnecessary artefacts being produced. In other words this new method is being applied with old thinking.

This new book takes Lean to another level... do we need this feature in the first place? If not it doesn't get build, or designed or even thought about. This book ties in other great works such as Thinking, Fast and Slow Paperback by Daniel Kahneman.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to be Leaner in their work practices, especially in the Software World

This book benefits from several key aspects. One of the more mundane is that each chapter has its own bibliography. It also doesn't hurt that many of these entries contain links to YouTube videos or other published web material. I would, in particular, recommend the TED talk that was given about the MRI scanner. This book has certainly affected how I will approach software development.

All know Scrum, really overestimated. Poppendieck's lean approach is worth to be known. There's no free lunch, also when you improve your software development processes. But this book and others from Mary and Tom will definitely help.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another great book by the Poppendieck 10. März 2014

I can only add my voice to all the people who gave excellent reviews about this book. For me, the "meat" of the book was the epilogue. Without saying "revelation" or "enligthment", it opened my eyes about what I was doing as an Agile coach and how I will have to change in my approach in the future. Thanks Mary and Tom for writting this book.
