I grew up with The Pogues. The lyrics and music of Shane MacGowan was a part of my birthright and still is. His music always fills me with such joy and pride being of the Irish heritage myself. I always felt like that band was really the finishing point of the Irish culture music in a traditional sense but also mixed with roots of Punk rock. Truly the last of a generation and time long since forgotten. Regrettably, Shane did not ultimately conceal his struggles with addiction and alcoholism, a disease with which I also live. I feel like he may have regarded it as a burden or at least that’s what I’ve read. Long story short, if you are looking for a fitting representation of Shane MacGowan in this band, you need to look elsewhere. This is repulsive. He is incomprehensible. He misses his cues, totally lapses in parts of songs (doesn’t sing at all) and often goes thru areas where he just mumbles, not actually saying words. I felt very grief stricken hearing Shane like this. I felt like it was a very unfair exposure of his disease and of a time when he was debilitated significantly because of it. I do not feel like this recording is a light in which he would have wanted to be remembered. Especially seeing as he did return to The Pogues after this point and was able to redeem himself and become much healthier and the type of performer that he always had it in him to be. I’m not sure why, out of all the performances they could have found, that they picked this one. Shane felt like one of my oldest friends and he deserves better than this recording. I didn’t enjoy this. But, maybe other people will.
