Synopsis

The fruit of 15 years of research, this remarkable book contains all of the words needed for daily and even sophisticated conversation, as great care has gone into the selection of the entry words and their meanings. It contains not only high-frequency English words with full Japanese equivalents, but also a number of technical terms, new words, and vocabulary related to Japanese culture. It also presents a large number of interjections, idioms, and phrasal verbs: the common expressions that lie at the very heart of the English language. Crucially, the "Communicative" strives to present only natural Japanese equivalents, ranging from colloquial to formal, masculine to feminine, and humble to polite. Most of the equivalents are readily usable in everyday speech. Furigana superscript is used to indicate kanji pronunciation. As furigana uses hiragana, the basic Japanese syllabary, this aligns the book with current teaching methodology and enables students to use this book even if they do not know a single kanji character. Also included are special entries on Japanese usage, and grammar appendices / key verb declensions.

By far this is the most comprehensive and practical dictionary of its kind, with over 22,000 entries and 19,000 sample sentences and phrases.

5.0 von 5 Sternen English-Japanese Dictionary by Peter Sharpe 12. November 2006

This is the best English-Japanese dictionary I've come across. It has the kana and the kanji. It lists the various meanings for an entry. It gives sample sentences (at times) to clarify usuage. It gives idiomatic expressions (at times). It's clear, straightforward, and easy to use. There are a lot of entries. The paper is good; the printing is good. It's what a dictionary should be. I highly recommend it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A good compliment but not enough to stand alone 1. Dezember 2010
Von Trevor C. Mearns - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I came across this book in a bookstore here in Japan and decided to order it through amazon because it was cheaper. It is a good dictionary probably the best I've come across in my nearly three years of living here and studying Japanese. However, it definetly requires some knowledge of and experience using the language if you really expect it to be worth the money. It has some excellent example sentences but, again, the nuances of the grammar aren't readily available to anyone who doesn't already have a solid foundation.

So, I think it would be more of a compliment to an existing Japanese reference library than a stand alone guide to learning the language as most dictionaries should be.The best books I came across to increase my ability were "A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" and "A Dictionary of Intermmidiate Japanese Grammar". There's also an advanced level but I'm not there yet. The differences in grammar between English and Japanese are enormous so I found these books to be amazingly helpful in getting me up to speed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen best dictionary for those learning to be fluent in japanese 16. Dezember 2011

Know that this is not a dictionary for searching words but more of a dictionary to help you learn to speak sentences. They have a word then japanese equivalent and then examples of sentences using those word. That is the purpose of this dictionary. To help you communicate. By reading the sentence examples you can figure out the meaning and reading of certain kanji which help build vocabulary. You are basically learning the words in the context of actual sentence communication. That's is why the title is kodansha's "communicative" english japanese dictionary. Do you not see the 'communicative' word in the title? Those bad reviews are using it as an actual english japanese dictionary which is not it's purpose. If you have solid understanding of the sentence grammar structure, this book is even more useful. I have a bachelor degree in Japanese and reading through this, i realized I know more than I think and am suppose to be able to communicate more than I could. But you know how it is, reading level is usually different from speaking level since schooling lack focus on speaking but more reading/writing. It's just a matter of practice and this book can help you. Just read the sentences out aloud and it will reinforce and help your speaking skill.

Bottomline: This dictionary is meant to help you improve your speaking by way of sentence examples. If you read it , study it, it will help you be able to communicate better. It's not meant to be search for meanings of words like an actual dictionary for translation but more of focusing on communicating.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Effective dictionary 17. Mai 2011

First off, the dictionary is ONLY English to Japanese, which it clearly says in the title. For that purpose it works very well. Every time I look something up, I find it fairly quickly. It is a hardcover with high quality and sturdy design. The words are medium sized.. not very large and not super small. It is focused on conversational speech and is not very precise with regard to exact and direct translation.. so if you need precise and direct translation, this is not the best bet. I have no complaints with this item - it does it's job well.
